An ever increasing service repair opportunity for workshops is the leaf spring suspension system on a four wheel drive utility. The semi elliptical leaf spring used in these vehicles is attached to the chassis at the front of the spring via a fixed shackle and bushings, at the rear of the spring via a swing shackle with bushings. This effective axle locating system is often overlooked during service, however these components stabilise the movement of the rear axle, worn bushings will cause the vehicle to “wander” on the road and be unstable under heavy braking, especially when loaded or towing.
