If I get a lift kit, should I get a steering damper as well?
The answer is yes! A 4x4 lift kit will change your vehicles factory steering geometry and amplifies the effects of intense vibration through the vehicles front wheels and steering system that is caused from uneven road or track surfaces therefore a Fulcrum steering damper is a must have.
What are Steering Dampers and how do they work?
Steering Dampers are shock absorbers that are fitted to a 4WD’s steering system for better control and performance. They are generally shown at the front ends of 4WD’s and are essential for vehicles with ‘live-beam’ front axles such as G-Series Patrols and all 70 and 80 Series Landcruiser’s.
Steering Dampers dampen the effects of intense vibration through the vehicles front wheels and steering system that is caused from uneven road or track surfaces. If bigger tyres and a 4x4 lift kit is added to a vehicle, this tends to change its factory steering geometry which will amplify the previously mentioned vibrations even more. For that reason, an upgraded steering damper is a must have! A Steering Damper is also the perfect solution to alleviate the “death wobble” or “shimmy” especially in vehicles fitted with larger wheels and tyres when travelling over sharp bumps, ridges, and potholes.
When do I need to replace or upgrade my steering damper?
If you’ve recently installed a 4x4 lift kit and fitted bigger tyres on your rig, then we highly recommend you upgrade your steering damper. Having a 4x4 lift kit and bigger tyres will require more force to resist road impacts and vibrations therefore a Formula steering damper is crucial to have. If you already have an aftermarket steering damper but needing to know if it needs replacing, then you can easily check it by looking at it. A bad steering damper will have oil leaking out, meaning it has bad seals. If it’s not leaking, simply removing it, and compressing it (moving it in and out) will confirm your thoughts. If it smoothly extends and retracts then it’s okay.
