Bash plates are heavy-duty guards that bolt to the underside of your 4x4. They shield the radiator, engine, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank from rocks, logs, ruts and debris. Also known as skid plates, sump guards or underbody protection, they're one of the most important upgrades for anyone who drives off the beaten track.

Fulcrum Suspensions stocks the Rival aluminium bash plate range. These vehicle-specific plates are made from 6 mm high-strength aluminium alloy and bolt on without drilling or welding.

Why Underbody Protection Matters

Factory underbody covers are usually thin plastic or light pressed steel, designed to deflect road spray rather than survive an impact. Off-road, a single rock strike can do serious damage:

  • Crack a sump and drain the engine oil.
  • Puncture a radiator.
  • Split a fuel tank, leaving you stranded far from help.

Quality bash plates absorb and spread the force of an impact, then let the vehicle slide over the obstacle rather than hang up on it. They protect the most expensive and trip-ending components on your vehicle. That reduces the risk of breakdowns, repair bills and recovery costs, and helps preserve resale value.

Underbody protection isn't only for hardcore rock crawling. Loaded touring vehicles, towing setups and lifted 4x4s all sit lower under load or travel over rougher ground than standard vehicles. A heavily laden vehicle can bottom out on tracks it would normally clear.

What Each Bash Plate Protects

Radiator and Front Plate

The front plate sits at the leading edge of your underbody, behind the bumper or bull bar. It protects the radiator, intercooler pipework and steering components from the first point of contact on steep entries, ditches and rock steps.

Engine and Sump Guard

The engine plate, often called a sump guard, protects the oil sump and front differential area. This is one of the most frequently struck zones on any 4x4, and sump damage can quickly lead to engine failure.

Transmission Plate

The transmission plate shields the gearbox housing and its sump. A damaged transmission sump can leak fluid and cause costly gearbox damage.

Transfer Case Plate

The transfer case plate protects the component that sends drive to both axles. Without it, you can lose four-wheel drive when you need it most.

Fuel Tank Guard

A fuel tank guard protects the tank from punctures and dents. That matters most on long-range touring vehicles, where losing fuel in a remote area is a serious safety risk.

Lower Control Arm Guards

Lower control arm guards protect your front suspension arms from rock strikes and abrasion. They help preserve suspension geometry and component life.

Building Your Bash Plate Kit

You can buy plates individually, or build a complete underbody protection kit by combining plates for every exposed position. A full kit gives continuous coverage from the front of the vehicle back to the fuel tank.

Buying plates separately lets you protect your most vulnerable areas first and add more coverage over time. A common approach:

  1. Start with the essentials. Begin with the front, radiator and engine plates. These areas take the most hits.
  2. Add driveline protection. Add transmission and transfer case plates for serious off-road driving.
  3. Complete the kit for touring. Finish with fuel tank and control arm guards for remote travel or regular rock work.

Aluminium vs Steel Bash Plates

Bash plates are typically made from aluminium, mild steel or stainless steel, and each material involves trade-offs.

  • Aluminium bash plates: Significantly lighter than steel at similar strength, and naturally corrosion-resistant. Lower weight means less load on your suspension and less impact on payload and fuel economy. Aluminium can gouge on sharp rocks, which is why quality aluminium plates use thicker material, such as 6 mm, to deliver comparable impact resistance.
  • Mild steel bash plates: Very strong and cost-effective, but heavy. They need a durable powder coat to resist rust, and once that coating is scratched, corrosion can set in.
  • Stainless steel bash plates: Strong and corrosion-resistant, but heavier than aluminium and usually more expensive than mild steel.

For most touring and recreational 4x4s, thick aluminium offers the best balance of strength, weight and corrosion resistance. This matters most on vehicles already carrying heavy accessories, water, gear and passengers close to their maximum payload.

What to Look for in Quality Bash Plates

  • Vehicle-specific design: Plates should be shaped for your vehicle's chassis and use factory mounting points for a precise fit.
  • Bolt-on installation: No drilling, cutting or welding, so the plates fit cleanly and can be removed for servicing.
  • Material thickness and strength: Thicker, high-grade alloy resists deformation from heavy impacts.
  • Smooth, low-snag profile: Deep-stamped or folded edges help the vehicle slide over obstacles rather than catch on them.
  • Cooling and airflow: Vents or louvres keep air moving around the engine and transmission.
  • Servicing access: Access holes let you drain oil and fluids without removing the whole plate.
  • Bull bar and accessory compatibility: Front plates should work with your bumper or bull bar setup.

Fitment and Installation

Each Rival bash plate is designed for a specific vehicle make, model and year range, so always select your vehicle when you shop to confirm fitment. Because the plates use existing factory mounting points, a confident DIY home mechanic can fit them with standard hand tools, a jack and stands, and the supplied vehicle-specific instructions.

Professional installation is also available. A workshop can check that every bolt is torqued correctly and that the plates sit with proper clearance from exhaust, driveline and steering components.

Bash plates don't generally require engineering approval, but it's good practice to tell your insurer about any vehicle modifications.

Caring for Your Bash Plates

Check your bash plates after every off-road trip, and especially after a hard strike:

  • Inspect for damage. Look for bends or deep gouges that could reduce clearance or press against components.
  • Check the mounting bolts. Re-torque any that have loosened.
  • Clear trapped debris. Remove mud, sand and debris from on top of the plates, where it can trap moisture and heat.
  • Wash after harsh conditions. Rinse the underbody after driving through mud, beach sand or salted roads.

A well-maintained aluminium bash plate can protect your 4x4 for many years of off-road use.
