4WD recovery gear is the equipment you use to get a stuck vehicle moving again, whether it's bogged in sand, stuck in mud or unable to climb an obstacle. Fulcrum's range of recovery gear includes 4WD recovery kits, kinetic ropes, soft shackles, winch shackles, recovery rings and recovery hitches. Whether you're building your first recovery setup or adding to an existing kit, you'll find 4x4 recovery gear to suit your vehicle and the way you travel.

Types of 4WD Recovery Gear

4WD Recovery Kits

A 4WD recovery kit brings together compatible recovery gear in one package. Recovery kits are a practical starting point if you're building a setup from scratch, because the items are designed to work together. Fulcrum's range includes kits for kinetic recoveries, kits for winch recoveries and kits that cover both. Check each listing to see what's included and which vehicles the kit is designed for.

Kinetic Ropes

A kinetic rope, or kinetic recovery rope, is designed to stretch under load during a recovery. As the recovery vehicle moves away, the rope stretches and stores energy, then transfers that energy to the stuck vehicle to help pull it free. The stretch also helps reduce the sudden shock of the recovery on both vehicles and the people inside them. Kinetic ropes are commonly used in loose terrain such as sand, mud and snow, and work on a similar principle to a snatch strap.

Soft Shackles and Winch Shackles

Shackles connect your recovery gear to recovery points and to each other. Soft shackles are made from synthetic fibre, which makes them lighter than metal shackles and easy to carry. Winch shackles are designed to connect to a winch line. Fulcrum's range includes soft shackles, which feature in many of the recovery kits, and alloy winch shackles.

Recovery Rings

A recovery ring is a small, lightweight alternative to a snatch block. Used with a winch, it can help change the direction of a pull. Some recovery rings are designed to be used only with soft shackles and synthetic winch ropes, so always check the product's instructions before use.

Recovery Hitches

A recovery hitch fits into your vehicle's tow bar receiver to give you a recovery point at the rear of the vehicle. You can then connect a soft shackle and your recovery rope or strap to the hitch.

Full details, ratings and inclusions are listed on each product page.

Kinetic Recoveries vs Winch Recoveries

There are two common ways to recover a stuck 4WD.

Kinetic recoveries use a second vehicle and a kinetic rope or snatch strap. The recovery vehicle builds momentum, and the stretch in the rope helps transfer that energy to the stuck vehicle. Kinetic recoveries are often used on sand and in mud when another vehicle is available.

Winch recoveries use a winch mounted to a vehicle to pull it free. Winch accessories such as winch extension ropes, recovery rings and shackles help you set up the pull safely, including when there is no second vehicle to help.

Many 4WD owners carry gear for both, so they're prepared for different situations on the track.

Recovery Gear Safety Basics

Recovery gear is placed under heavy load, so safety needs to come first. Keep these basics in mind:

  • Use rated recovery points: only attach recovery gear to rated recovery points on your vehicle. Never use a tow ball as a recovery point.
  • Check the ratings: make sure your recovery gear is rated to suit the vehicles involved in the recovery, and follow the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Inspect before use: check ropes, shackles and other gear for damage before each recovery.
  • Keep people clear: keep bystanders well away from the recovery area while gear is under load.
  • Follow the instructions: use each item as directed by the manufacturer.

If you're new to recovering a vehicle, consider learning recovery techniques from an experienced 4WDer or a recognised driver training provider before heading off-road.

Choosing the Right Recovery Gear

The right recovery gear depends on your vehicle and the way you use it. Before you buy, consider:

  • Your vehicle: choose gear rated to suit the weight of your vehicle and the vehicles you travel with.
  • Where you travel: consider whether you mainly drive on sand, in mud or on rocky tracks.
  • Your setup: if your vehicle has a winch, look at winch recovery gear, and if you travel with other vehicles, consider kinetic recovery gear.
  • What you already carry: check what's in your current kit so you can fill the gaps.

If you're unsure where to start, a recovery kit is a simple way to get compatible gear in one purchase. Fulcrum's team can also help you choose.

Looking After Your Recovery Gear

Looking after your recovery gear helps make sure it's ready when you need it.

  • Inspect your gear after each use for cuts, abrasion or other damage.
  • Clean off dirt, mud and sand before storing your gear.
  • Let gear dry before packing it away.
  • Store gear in a bag to keep it protected and organised in your vehicle.

Replace any recovery gear that shows signs of damage, and follow the manufacturer's care instructions.
