Read moreDrag link bushes are replacement bushes for the drag link, a part of the steering linkage on vehicles that use a steering box. Fulcrum's range of drag link bushes includes drag link bush kits, drag link pivot bush kits and related steering linkage bushes for selected vehicles. These include parts for classic cars such as the Ford Cortina, Jaguar Mk1 and Mk2, and Chrysler Valiant.
What Is a Drag Link?
A drag link is a rod in the steering system that transfers movement from the steering box to the wheels. On vehicles with a steering box, turning the steering wheel moves a drop arm, also called a pitman arm, on the steering box. The drag link connects that arm to a steering arm, which turns the wheels.
Drag links are used on vehicles with a steering box rather than rack-and-pinion steering. Rack-and-pinion systems are laid out differently and don't use a drag link in the same way.
Drag Link vs Tie Rod
The drag link and the tie rod are both parts of the steering linkage, but they do different jobs:
- The drag link connects the steering box, through the drop arm, to a steering arm at the wheel.
- The tie rod, also called a track rod, connects the wheels to each other so they turn together and stay aligned.
Because they work together, wear in one part of the steering linkage can affect how the whole system feels.
What Do Drag Link Bushes Do?
On some vehicles, the drag link connects to other steering components through bushes. These bushes sit at the connection points and allow the steering linkage to move as the wheels are turned.
When drag link bushes are in good condition, they help the steering linkage move as it should. When they wear, the connection can loosen.
Related Steering Linkage Bushes
Fulcrum's drag link bush range also includes related steering linkage bushes, such as idler arm bushes, for selected vehicles. On some steering systems, an idler arm helps support the steering linkage on the opposite side to the steering box. Like drag link bushes, idler arm bushes can wear over time.
Signs Your Drag Link Bushes May Need Replacing
Steering bushes are used every time you turn the wheel, and they can wear with age and use. Worn drag link bushes or other steering linkage bushes can contribute to:
- Looseness or play in the steering
- Knocking or clunking from the front of the vehicle when turning
- Bushes that are cracked, perished or visibly worn
These symptoms can have other causes too. If you notice any change in how your steering feels, have your steering and suspension inspected by a qualified technician.
Drag Link Bushes for Classic Vehicles
Many classic and older vehicles use a steering box and drag link, and their original steering bushes have often worn after years of use. Drag link bushes and related steering linkage bushes are common replacement items during classic car restorations and maintenance.
Fulcrum's range includes drag link bushes and steering linkage bushes for selected classic vehicles. Replacing worn steering bushes alongside other suspension and chassis work helps bring the vehicle back to good working order.
Choosing the Right Drag Link Bush Kit
Drag link bush kits are designed to suit particular vehicles, so choosing the right one starts with your make and model. Before you buy, check:
- Vehicle fitment: use the vehicle search to find drag link bushes that suit your make, model and year.
- The part you need: confirm whether you need drag link bushes, drag link pivot bushes or related steering linkage bushes such as idler arm bushes.
- What's included: check the product listing to see what comes in each kit.
Full fitment details, specifications and inclusions are listed on each product page. If you can't find drag link bushes for your vehicle, or you're unsure which ones you need, Fulcrum's team can help.
Fitting Drag Link Bushes
Drag link bushes are part of your vehicle's steering system, so they need to be fitted correctly. If you're not confident working on steering components, have them fitted by a qualified technician. After steering work, a wheel alignment helps make sure the steering and wheels are set up correctly.
