Universal suspension parts and hardware cover a broad range of components used for suspension installation, adjustment, repair and custom applications. This can include sway bar hardware, U-bolts, alignment components, bump stops, spacers, polyurethane materials and other suspension accessories.
The term "universal" does not mean every component fits every vehicle. Some suspension hardware is selected by dimensions or specifications, while other parts remain dependent on the suspension design, mounting position or vehicle application. Always check the individual product specifications before purchase.
What Are Universal Suspension Parts?
Universal suspension parts are components that are not necessarily limited to one specific vehicle application. Depending on the product, suitability may instead be determined by dimensions, mounting configuration, thread size, bush size or another technical specification.
This makes universal hardware useful for suspension repairs, modifications and custom setups where a suitable component needs to be selected according to its physical and functional requirements.
However, suspension components operate as part of a system. A part that physically fits is not automatically appropriate for the suspension. Its dimensions, movement, mounting arrangement and intended function also need to suit the application.
Types of Suspension Hardware
Suspension hardware covers components with very different functions. Understanding what each type does can help narrow the search before checking dimensions and compatibility.
Sway Bar Links and Lateral Locks
Sway bar links connect the sway bar to the suspension, transferring movement between the suspension and bar as the vehicle moves through corners and uneven road surfaces.
Adjustable sway bar links can provide additional adjustment where the suspension setup requires it. A universal sway bar link should be selected according to factors such as its mounting arrangement, dimensions and adjustment range rather than assuming it fits every suspension.
Lateral locks perform a different job. Where suitable for the sway bar arrangement, they can be used to help control unwanted lateral movement of the bar.
Sway Bar Mount Bushes and Saddle Kits
Sway bar bushes support the sway bar at its chassis mounting points while allowing the bar to rotate as the suspension operates.
Correct bush sizing is important. The internal diameter needs to suit the sway bar, while the external shape and mounting arrangement need to work with the relevant saddle or bracket.
Where polyurethane sway bar bushes are appropriate for the application, their resistance to deformation and deterioration can make them useful for controlling the bar at its mounting points.
Saddle kits and associated mounting hardware should likewise be matched to the bush and mounting arrangement rather than selected by appearance alone.
U-Bolts and Leaf Spring Hardware
U-bolts are commonly used as fastening components in leaf spring suspension arrangements. Leaf spring U-bolts help secure components within the axle and spring assembly, depending on the suspension design.
U-bolts need to match the application in dimensions, thread specification and other relevant requirements. Length and diameter alone may not provide enough information to determine suitability.
Suspension fasteners operate under significant loads, so the correct hardware and installation procedure are important. Existing U-bolts and surrounding components should also be inspected when suspension work is carried out.
Camber Bolts and Alignment Shims
Camber bolts and alignment shims can provide adjustment or correction where they are suitable for the suspension design.
A camber bolt kit may provide a means of changing wheel alignment geometry at a compatible mounting point. Alignment shims achieve adjustment differently and are used only in suspension arrangements designed to accept them.
These parts should not be treated as universal fixes for uneven tyre wear, pulling or an alignment measurement outside specification. The cause should first be identified, and the adjustment method needs to be appropriate for the suspension.
A wheel alignment is generally required when alignment components are installed or adjusted so the resulting geometry can be measured and set correctly.
Bump Stops and Coil Spring Spacers
Bump stops help limit suspension movement near the end of its available travel, protecting components from inappropriate contact or excessive compression within the suspension design.
Replacement bump stops need to suit the available space, mounting arrangement and suspension travel.
Coil spring spacers perform a different function. They are fitted in particular coil spring arrangements where a spacer is appropriate for the suspension setup. Dimensions, positioning and compatibility all need to be checked before installation.
A coil spring spacer should not be selected solely according to the amount of height change desired. Its effect on suspension geometry, travel and related components also needs to be considered.
Lowering Blocks
Lowering blocks are used in compatible suspension arrangements to alter the relationship between suspension components and vehicle ride height.
Their suitability depends on the suspension design and the dimensions and hardware required for the installation. A lowering block should therefore be selected as part of a complete suspension setup rather than treated as a universal method of lowering any vehicle.
Changes in ride height can also affect suspension geometry and wheel alignment, so the resulting setup should be checked after installation.
DIY Polyurethane Rod, Sheet and Universal Bushes
Polyurethane sheet, rod and universal bushes can be useful where material is required for suitable custom fabrication, workshop or replacement applications.
Polyurethane is commonly used in suspension bush applications because it can provide resistance to deformation, wear and deterioration while allowing a component to be designed around the movement required at the mounting point.
However, material selection is only one part of designing or choosing a bush. Dimensions, hardness, shape, load, movement and mounting arrangement all influence whether a polyurethane component is suitable.
DIY polyurethane material should therefore be selected and fabricated with an understanding of the mechanical requirements of the application rather than simply matching the dimensions of an existing component.
Grease and Workshop Consumables
Suspension installation and maintenance can also require appropriate grease and other workshop consumables.
Where a bush or suspension component requires lubrication, use a lubricant suitable for the component material and follow the relevant installation instructions. Using an unsuitable lubricant can affect some bush materials or interfere with their intended operation.
Consumables may seem minor compared with the suspension component itself, but correct installation products can be an important part of completing the job properly.
Signs Your Suspension Hardware May Need Inspection
Suspension components and mounting hardware experience repeated movement and loads. Wear, deterioration or incorrect adjustment can develop over time, but symptoms alone do not identify which component is responsible.
Reasons to have the suspension inspected can include:
- Clunking, knocking or other unusual suspension noises
- Uneven or unexplained tyre wear
- Changes in steering or handling
- Pulling or difficulty maintaining alignment
- Excessive or unusual suspension movement
- Visible deterioration of bushes or bump stops
- Loose, damaged or corroded mounting hardware
- Changes noticed after suspension modification
These symptoms can have several causes. A worn bush, damaged sway bar link, alignment issue or another suspension or steering component can produce similar behaviour.
Inspection should therefore focus on identifying the source of the problem before replacement or upgrade parts are selected. Where appropriate, components on both sides of an axle should also be inspected because they may have experienced similar service conditions.
What to Check Before Buying Universal Parts
Start with the job the component needs to perform, then confirm its dimensions and compatibility.
For universal suspension hardware, check relevant measurements such as mounting dimensions, bush diameter, bolt or thread size, adjustment range and other specifications provided for the individual product.
Mounting position also matters. Front and rear suspension systems can use very different components, and similar-looking hardware may perform different functions depending on where it is installed.
If the part is intended to change suspension geometry or ride height, consider its effect on the complete suspension system rather than the individual component alone. Related clearances, suspension travel and wheel alignment may also need to be checked.
For vehicle-specific items listed within the broader Universal Parts category, use the supplied fitment information rather than assuming the component is universal because of the category in which it appears.
