Read moreLowering blocks provide a way to reduce ride height on compatible leaf spring suspension systems by changing the position of the axle relative to the leaf spring. Available in different heights and configurations, they allow the amount of lowering to be selected while retaining the existing leaf springs where the suspension design is suitable.
Choosing the right lowering blocks involves more than deciding how far you want the vehicle to sit lower. Block dimensions, locating pin and hole sizes, U-bolt specifications, suspension layout and available clearance all need to be considered. Correct installation is also important because lowering blocks form part of the axle-to-leaf-spring mounting arrangement.
What Are Lowering Blocks for Leaf Springs?
Lowering blocks are designed for compatible leaf-sprung suspension arrangements where placing a correctly sized block between the axle and leaf spring changes the static position of the axle relative to the vehicle.
This reduces ride height without using lowering springs intended for coil-sprung suspension. Although both products can lower a vehicle, they work with fundamentally different suspension designs and should not be treated as interchangeable.
A lowering block typically incorporates locating features that correspond with the leaf spring and axle mounting arrangement. Longer U-bolts are generally required to accommodate the additional distance created by the block, which is why lowering blocks are commonly supplied as part of a matched lowering block kit.
Lowering blocks change static ride height, but they do not replace the function of the leaf spring or shock absorber. They also do not repair worn suspension components. Existing springs, bushes, U-bolts, dampers and related mounting components should be inspected before modifying ride height.
The suitability of lowering blocks depends on the suspension design. They are not a universal lowering solution for every vehicle simply because the vehicle uses leaf springs.
Lowering Block Sizes: 1 to 2.5 Inch
Lowering blocks are available in different heights to provide different amounts of ride-height change. Common options can include 1 inch, 1.5 inch, 2 inch and 2.5 inch lowering blocks, depending on the application and available product specifications.
A 2 inch lowering block, for example, is intended to create a different ride-height change from a 1 inch block, but block height should not be selected on appearance alone.
The appropriate size depends on the existing suspension arrangement, desired ride height, available clearance and whether the resulting geometry remains suitable.
A larger lowering block is therefore not automatically the better choice. Increasing the amount of lowering can affect factors such as available suspension travel, shock absorber operating range, driveline angles and clearance between components.
The actual dimensions of the block matter as well. Two lowering blocks with the same nominal height may not necessarily share the same width, locating pin dimensions or centre-hole configuration.
Before selecting a size, check the individual product specifications and compare them with the existing leaf spring and axle arrangement.
What's in a Lowering Block Kit?
A lowering block kit combines the components required for a compatible lowering-block installation rather than supplying the block without consideration for the surrounding axle mounting arrangement.
Depending on the individual kit, components may include lowering blocks and suitable U-bolts. The exact contents should always be confirmed from the individual product listing rather than assumed.
U-bolts are particularly important because adding a lowering block changes the distance across the axle, block and leaf spring assembly. The U-bolts therefore need sufficient length while also matching the required diameter, thread and mounting arrangement.
The locating features of the block also matter. The pin and corresponding hole help locate compatible suspension components correctly relative to one another. A block that has the required height but incompatible locating dimensions is not necessarily suitable.
When comparing kits, check what is supplied as well as the physical specifications of each component.
Are Lowering Blocks Legal?
The legality of suspension modifications depends on the vehicle, jurisdiction, amount of modification and applicable vehicle standards and registration requirements.
Lowering blocks should therefore not be assumed to be legal simply because they are commercially available.
Australian requirements can vary according to the modification and where the vehicle is registered. Ride height, ground clearance, suspension travel and other aspects of the modified vehicle may need to remain within applicable requirements. More substantial modifications can also involve additional inspection, certification or engineering requirements. The type of suspension arrangement can affect what modifications are permissible as well.
If you're unsure whether a proposed lowering setup complies with the requirements applying to your vehicle, check the current regulations for your state or territory and seek appropriate professional or engineering advice before proceeding.
This is particularly important when combining lowering blocks with other suspension modifications, because the complete setup needs to be considered rather than assessing each component independently.
What to Check Before Buying Lowering Blocks
Lowering blocks need to match both the desired ride-height change and the physical suspension arrangement.
Start by confirming that the vehicle uses a compatible leaf spring layout suitable for lowering blocks. From there, check the dimensions and specifications of the existing axle and leaf spring mounting arrangement against the proposed kit.
Important details can include:
- Required lowering block height
- Block width and overall dimensions
- Locating pin diameter
- Centre-hole diameter
- U-bolt diameter and length
- U-bolt thread specification
- Axle and leaf spring configuration
- Available suspension travel
- Shock absorber operating range
- Clearance around surrounding suspension and driveline components
Fitment by dimension is particularly important. The term "universal" should not be interpreted as meaning that one lowering block fits every leaf-sprung vehicle.
A block may be suitable across multiple applications where the required dimensions and mounting configuration correspond, but those specifications still need to be checked.
The existing suspension should also be inspected before installation. Worn leaf spring bushes, damaged springs, deteriorated dampers or problems with mounting hardware should not be overlooked simply because the vehicle is being lowered.
Changing ride height can also affect suspension and driveline relationships. The complete setup should therefore be considered when deciding how much to lower the vehicle.
Installing Lowering Blocks
Correct installation is important because lowering blocks become part of the assembly locating the axle relative to the leaf springs.
The vehicle needs to be safely supported and the axle controlled while the original U-bolts and related components are removed. The lowering blocks must then be positioned correctly so that their locating features correspond with the spring and axle arrangement.
Suitable U-bolts should be used for the installation, with the correct dimensions and specifications for the application. Fasteners should be installed and tightened according to the applicable product and vehicle requirements.
Once fitted, check that the axle and blocks are correctly located and that there is suitable clearance throughout the surrounding suspension arrangement.
The modified ride height should also be assessed in relation to shock absorber travel, suspension movement and driveline geometry.
Because the exact procedure varies between applications, professional installation is worth considering where the required fitment, measurements or resulting suspension geometry are uncertain.
Find Lowering Blocks for Your Vehicle
