Read moreSway bar lateral locks are small components designed to help control sideways movement of a compatible sway bar. Installed in the appropriate position on the bar, they act as locating collars that limit lateral movement while allowing the sway bar to perform its normal function as the suspension moves.
Unlike many vehicle-specific suspension components, universal sway bar lateral locks are selected primarily according to the diameter of the sway bar. Choosing the correct size is therefore the key step when ordering a lateral lock kit.
Fulcrum offers universal sway bar lateral locks across a range of sway bar diameters, allowing the appropriate lock to be selected according to the dimensions of the bar rather than a specific vehicle application.
What Do Sway Bar Lateral Locks Do?
A sway bar connects the suspension across the vehicle and twists as the suspension moves differently from one side to the other. It works with mounting bushes, links and other associated hardware as part of the suspension system.
While the sway bar needs to rotate within its mounting bushes, unwanted sideways movement along the bar can occur in some arrangements.
A sway bar lateral lock is fitted around the sway bar in a suitable position to help restrict this side-to-side movement. You may also see this type of component described more generally as a sway bar collar or sway bar clamp.
The lateral lock does not replace the sway bar mounting bush. Instead, the two components perform different jobs. The mounting bush supports the sway bar while allowing the required rotational movement, whereas the lateral lock helps locate the bar laterally.
This distinction is important when diagnosing sway bar movement. If the mounting bushes themselves are worn or damaged, installing lateral locks does not repair the bushes. Likewise, replacing sway bar bushes will not necessarily provide the same lateral locating function as a dedicated lock where one is required.
The complete sway bar, bushes, mounts, links and related hardware should be inspected when unwanted movement or noise is being investigated.
When Are Sway Bar Lateral Locks Used?
Lateral locks can be used where a compatible sway bar arrangement requires additional control of side-to-side movement.
Their suitability depends on the sway bar design, available mounting space and bar diameter. They should not be treated as a universal solution for every noise or handling issue involving the sway bar.
If unwanted lateral movement is identified during inspection, the cause should be considered before parts are fitted. Check the sway bar mounting bushes, brackets, links and surrounding hardware for wear, damage or incorrect positioning.
A lateral lock is intended to help locate the bar. It should not be used to disguise worn components elsewhere in the sway bar system.
Similarly, claims that lateral locks will automatically improve tyre wear, vehicle safety or overall handling should be treated cautiously. The effect of any suspension component depends on the condition and design of the complete system.
The practical reason to fit a lateral lock is much simpler: to provide additional lateral location for a compatible sway bar where that function is required.
Choosing the Correct Sway Bar Lateral Lock Size
Sizing is the most important consideration when buying universal sway bar lateral locks.
These products are selected according to sway bar diameter, so the bar should be measured before ordering if its diameter is not already known.
Measure the Sway Bar Diameter
Measure the diameter of the sway bar at the position where the lateral lock will be installed.
Do not assume the bar diameter from the vehicle application alone. Different sway bars can be fitted to the same vehicle, particularly where suspension components have previously been changed or upgraded.
For the most reliable measurement, use an appropriate measuring tool and check the actual outside diameter of the bar.
The measurement should correspond with the size specified for the lateral lock. A lock that is too large may not locate securely, while one that is too small will not fit correctly around the bar.
Check the Installation Position
Diameter is essential, but it is not the only consideration. There also needs to be an appropriate location on the sway bar for the lateral lock. Check the available space around the bar, mounting bushes, brackets and nearby suspension components.
The lock should be positioned according to its intended installation arrangement without interfering with the sway bar's required movement or surrounding components.
If there is insufficient clearance or the bar design does not provide a suitable mounting position, selecting the correct nominal diameter alone does not establish compatibility.
Sway Bar Lateral Locks vs Sway Bar Bushes
Sway bar lateral locks and sway bar bushes are related components, but they should not be confused.
Sway bar mounting bushes support the bar at its chassis mounting points and allow it to rotate as the suspension operates. Their dimensions and condition can influence how securely the sway bar is supported.
Lateral locks are fitted to provide lateral location rather than replacing this mounting function.
If a sway bar is moving excessively because its mounting bushes are worn, the bushes should be inspected and replaced where required. Adding lateral locks does not restore a deteriorated bush.
Conversely, where the bushes are serviceable but the sway bar arrangement requires additional lateral location, an appropriately sized lateral lock may be suitable.
Looking at both components separately helps avoid replacing or adding parts that do not address the actual issue.
What to Check Before Buying Sway Bar Lateral Locks
Before ordering a universal sway bar lateral lock kit, confirm:
- The outside diameter of the sway bar
- The diameter specified for the lateral lock
- Available space at the intended mounting position
- Clearance from sway bar bushes and mounting brackets
- Clearance from nearby suspension components
- The condition of the sway bar and existing hardware
- The required quantity and contents of the individual kit
Do not select a lateral lock based solely on the vehicle make or model. These universal components are dimension-based, so the actual sway bar fitted to the vehicle is the more important reference.
This is particularly useful where an aftermarket or replacement sway bar has previously been installed, as its diameter may differ from another bar available for the same application.
Find Universal Sway Bar Lateral Locks
Fulcrum's universal sway bar lateral locks are available for different sway bar diameters, allowing you to select the appropriate kit according to the actual bar fitted to the vehicle.
Measure the sway bar at the intended installation point and compare that measurement with the individual product specifications before ordering. Also check that there is sufficient clearance for the lock to be installed without interfering with the sway bar bushes, brackets or surrounding suspension components.
