Sway bar link bushes and washers are small but important parts of compatible sway bar link assemblies. They help maintain a controlled connection between the sway bar and suspension while allowing the movement required as the suspension operates.

Also commonly known as sway bar link bushings, these components are different from the mounting bushes that support the sway bar against the chassis and from complete sway bar links. Understanding the difference is important when diagnosing suspension noise, checking worn components and choosing the correct replacement parts.

When a sway bar link bush becomes cracked, compressed or otherwise deteriorated, unwanted movement can develop within the link assembly. Replacement may be appropriate when inspection confirms that the bush is worn and the remaining link components are still serviceable.

What Do Sway Bar Link Bushings Do?

A sway bar helps control differences in suspension movement between the left and right sides of a vehicle. Sway bar links connect the bar to compatible suspension mounting points, allowing forces to be transferred through the system as the suspension moves.

On link designs that use replaceable bushes, the sway bar link bush provides a controlled interface between components in the assembly. Washers may also be used alongside the bushes to support and locate them correctly.

Repeated suspension movement and loading can gradually affect bush condition. If a bush becomes worn or deformed, additional clearance can develop within the assembly and allow movement that was not present when the components were in serviceable condition.

Not every sway bar link uses replaceable bushes. Some links use ball joints or other joint arrangements instead. Before buying individual bushes, confirm that the existing link is designed to use serviceable bushes and that the rest of the assembly remains suitable for reuse.

Types of Sway Bar Link Bushes and Washers

Sway bar link designs vary, so bushes and associated hardware should be selected according to the existing assembly rather than assuming similar-looking components are interchangeable.

Sway Bar Link Bush Kits

A sway bar link bush kit groups components intended to replace bushes in a compatible bushed link arrangement. Kit contents can differ, so always check the individual product information before ordering.

Bush dimensions are particularly important. Inside diameter, outside diameter, height and profile can all affect how the bush sits within the assembly.

The condition of the existing link and hardware should also be checked. Installing new bushes will not correct a bent link, damaged fastener or excessively worn mounting surface.

Where the link itself is damaged or uses a non-serviceable joint, replacing the complete sway bar link may be more appropriate than replacing individual bushes.

Sway Bar Link Washers and Cupped Washers

Washers can form part of a bushed sway bar link assembly by helping support and locate the bush around the mounting hardware.

Some assemblies use cupped washers, which have a shaped profile designed to correspond with the bush and surrounding components.

A sway bar link washer should not be selected by outside diameter alone. Its centre-hole size, thickness, shape and relationship with the bush and fastener can all affect compatibility.

Existing washers should therefore be inspected when bushes are replaced. Bent, damaged or heavily corroded hardware may require replacement rather than automatically being reused with new bushes.

Sway Bar Link Bushes vs Sway Bar Mount Bushes

Sway bar link bushes and sway bar bushes perform different jobs.

Sway bar mounting bushes support the sway bar at its chassis mounting points and allow the bar to rotate as the suspension operates. Link bushes are associated with compatible sway bar link assemblies connecting the bar to the suspension.

This distinction matters during diagnosis.

Replacing link bushes will not repair deteriorated chassis-mounted sway bar bushes. Likewise, replacing sway bar mounting bushes will not correct excessive movement within a worn bushed link assembly.

If noise or unwanted movement is being investigated, inspect the sway bar, mounting bushes, brackets, links and associated hardware rather than assuming one component is responsible.

Signs Sway Bar Link Bushes May Be Worn

Physical inspection is the best starting point when checking sway bar link bushes.

Signs that may justify closer inspection include:

  • Cracking or visible deterioration
  • Bushes that appear excessively compressed or distorted
  • Gaps around the bush or mounting hardware
  • Excessive movement within the bushed link assembly
  • Loose or damaged washers and fasteners
  • Clunking or rattling from the suspension over uneven surfaces
  • Changes in body movement or cornering behaviour

A visual and physical inspection can help identify deterioration, excessive clearance or damaged hardware. Where the source of the problem remains unclear, a professional suspension inspection can provide a more reliable diagnosis before replacement parts are ordered.

Polyurethane Sway Bar Link Bushes

Polyurethane can be used for replacement bushes in compatible sway bar link applications. Depending on its formulation and design, polyurethane can provide resistance to deformation and deterioration while maintaining controlled movement within the assembly. A firmer bush can also reduce unwanted compliance in a compatible bushed link arrangement.

However, material alone does not determine whether a bush is suitable. Dimensions, profile, suspension design and installation requirements are equally important.

Polyurethane bushes also need to be installed according to their specific requirements. Where lubrication is required, the appropriate grease should be used during installation.

What to Check Before Buying Sway Bar Link Bushes

Correct fitment is particularly important with individual bushes and washers because relatively small dimensional differences can affect how the assembly fits together.

Before ordering, check:

  • Bush inside diameter
  • Bush outside diameter
  • Bush height and overall dimensions
  • Bush shape and profile
  • Link and fastener dimensions
  • Washer outside diameter
  • Washer centre-hole diameter
  • Washer shape or profile
  • Number of bushes and washers required
  • Kit contents
  • Condition of the existing link and mounting hardware

For universal components, measuring the existing parts is particularly useful. A bush that looks similar may have a different centre hole, height or profile, while washers of a similar diameter can have different shapes or mounting requirements.

Do not modify an incorrectly sized bush simply to make it fit. If the dimensions do not correspond with the existing assembly, identify the correct component instead.

If you're unsure about fitment, Fulcrum can assist with product information and help determine what specifications should be checked before ordering.

Replacing Sway Bar Link Bushes

Replacement requirements depend on the sway bar link and suspension design. Where the bushes are separately serviceable, the relevant link hardware is disassembled so the existing bushes and washers can be removed. This is also an opportunity to inspect the link, fasteners, washers and mounting points for damage or excessive wear.

Replacement bushes and washers should be installed in the correct sequence and orientation for the particular link design. Any lubrication requirements should also be followed.

Fasteners should be installed according to the applicable requirements. Correct assembly is important because the bushes and washers need to sit as intended within the link arrangement.

Replacing sway bar link bushes alone does not typically involve adjusting wheel alignment settings. However, if other suspension components are loosened, removed or adjusted during the repair, additional checks may be appropriate.

If inspection reveals damage or excessive wear elsewhere in the link assembly, replacing the bushes alone may not address the underlying problem.

Replacement Cost and Professional Installation

The cost of replacing sway bar link bushes depends on the parts required, the design of the link and the labour involved in accessing and servicing the assembly.

Rather than relying on a generic replacement-cost estimate, check the applicable product information and available fitted pricing for the specific repair.

Professional inspection can also help determine whether the bushes are actually responsible for the symptoms. Fulcrum's suspension specialists can inspect the surrounding sway bar and suspension components, helping identify whether the issue is associated with the link bushes, mounting bushes, links or another part of the system.

Eligible parts can also be purchased using Click & Fit, allowing the parts and professional installation to be organised through a participating Fulcrum workshop. This can be particularly useful when fitment or the source of suspension noise has not yet been confirmed.

Find the Right Sway Bar Link Bushes and Washers

Choose sway bar link bushes and washers according to the design and dimensions of the existing link assembly. Check the individual product specifications, dimensions, fitment information and kit contents against the components being replaced before ordering.

If you're unsure what you need, contact Fulcrum and we can assist with fitment and product information.

These kits sit in our universal parts range, and complete universal sway bar links are available if the link itself needs replacing.

For added convenience, Click & Fit can help organise professional installation through a participating workshop, while products sold by Fulcrum are covered by a national warranty.
