It matters less, and it still matters. Sealed road driving avoids the articulation that makes a steep CV angle worst, but the joint runs at that angle continuously at highway speed under load. A road only lifted ute wears its front CVs faster, just less dramatically than a tourer. 

"It only matters if you wheel hard" is a fair thing to assume and it is half right. The damage a steep front CV angle does is worst under articulation, so a ute that never sees a track avoids the worst case. What it does not avoid is running at the wrong angle every kilometre it drives. Our diff drop kits are worth fitting to a road driven lifted 4WD, and the reasoning is different to the off road case.

Two different kinds of load on the same joint

Off road, the damage comes from extremes. Full droop over a washout puts the shaft at its steepest angle of the whole build, and a corrugated road cycles the suspension thousands of times an hour. Those are peak events, and a diff drop reduces the peak. 

On the road, the damage comes from duration. The suspension sits near ride height, so the CV runs at the static operating angle almost continuously, and at highway speed that means thousands of rotations a minute for hours at a time. Nothing dramatic happens in any single rotation. The grease just spends its whole life being worked harder than it was designed to be. 

Peak damage and duration damage both end at the same place, which is a joint that needs replacing sooner than it should. The road driven version simply takes longer and gives fewer warnings along the way.

Where the road only case is actually worse

There are two respects in which a highway ute has it harder than a tourer. 

Sustained heat: Two hours at 100km/h keeps the joint at a steady elevated temperature with no cool down. A slow technical track spins the shaft far more gently even though the angles are worse. Heat is what degrades CV grease, so continuous highway running is a genuine grease killer. 

Load, if you tow: Towing raises driveline torque and pulls the rear down, which changes attitude and can steepen the front angle further. A lifted dual cab towing a caravan at highway speed is a duration case with extra torque on top. That combination gets underestimated a lot, because the owner does not think of themselves as an off road user.

Who we would and would not push it to

We would rather give you an honest split than sell a kit to everyone. 

Fit it: Any 2 inch or higher lift on a platform where the measured angle sits outside our recommended range, including every N90 Hilux at 50mm. Anything that tows regularly. Anything doing high annual kilometres. Anything carrying permanent front weight from a bar and winch, which drops front ride height and changes the geometry again. Anyone intending to keep the vehicle past 150,000km. 

Have it measured before deciding: A lift under 50mm on an older platform with long front shafts, low annual kilometres and no towing. That is the case where the answer might genuinely be no, and we will tell you if it is. 

Probably not worth it: A vehicle at factory ride height. A rear axle only change with no front lift. A 2WD.

The cheap version of the decision

If you are lifting a road driven ute and you are unsure, the practical answer is to fit the kit during the lift rather than debate it. The front end is already apart, so you pay for the part and almost no extra labour. Coming back later doubles the labour on the same job.

Does a diff drop matter if I only drive on the road?

Yes, less urgently than off road. Sealed road driving avoids the articulation that produces peak angles, but the joint runs at its static operating angle continuously, and at highway speed that is sustained load and heat. Wear still accelerates.

Is a diff drop only for people who go off road?

No. The off road case is more obvious because the angles are worse at full droop. The road case is about duration rather than extremes, and it is the reason we recommend one on high kilometre and towing vehicles.

Does towing change whether I need one?

It raises the priority. Towing increases driveline torque and alters vehicle attitude, which can steepen the front angle. A lifted dual cab that tows regularly is one of the clearer cases for fitting a kit.

I only did a 40mm lift. Do I still need one?

Possibly not, and it depends on the platform. A lift under 50mm on an older front end with long CV shafts can sit inside a sensible range. Have it measured rather than assuming either way.

Does a bull bar and winch change the answer?

They lower front ride height, which changes the geometry from what the lift alone produced. Any permanent front weight is worth declaring when you ask us for the answer for your vehicle.

If I am keeping the ute only a couple of years, can I skip it?

That is a reasonable commercial call on a low kilometre road only build with a modest lift. Understand you are passing the wear on rather than avoiding it, and that a front end with worn CVs affects resale.

Will a diff drop change how it drives on the road?

It should not change ride or steering feel. It restores driveline geometry rather than altering suspension rates or alignment. Any 2 inch lift needs an alignment afterwards regardless.
