A certified GVM upgrade fitted by an approved installer doesn’t automatically void your Toyota Hilux warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer can’t refuse a claim just because aftermarket parts are fitted, though it can decline a claim where the modification caused the fault. Keep your certification paperwork, and declare the upgrade to your insurer.

Warranty is the first worry for most owners of a newer Hilux, and it’s a fair one. You’ve paid good money for a five year factory warranty and you don’t want to put it at risk. Here’s what a GVM upgrade does and doesn’t mean for your Toyota warranty, how our kits are backed, and what to tell your insurer. When you’re ready to compare kits, see our full range of GVM upgrades.

Does a GVM Upgrade Void Warranty on a Toyota Hilux?

A GVM upgrade does not automatically void your Toyota Hilux warranty. Australian Consumer Law protects you here, because a vehicle manufacturer can’t refuse a warranty claim simply because aftermarket parts have been fitted or the vehicle has been modified.

What a manufacturer can do is decline a claim where the aftermarket part, or the way it was fitted, caused or contributed to the fault. So an engine fault unrelated to your suspension should still be covered, while a manufacturer may look closely at a claim involving parts the upgrade affects, such as suspension, steering or driveline components.

That’s why who engineers, fits and certifies your upgrade matters so much. Our Hilux GVM upgrades are engineered, road tested and certified, and when installed and certified by an approved installer such as Fulcrum Suspensions, they’re designed not to affect your vehicle’s factory warranty.

How to Protect Your Hilux Warranty When You Upgrade GVM

You can keep your position strong by doing a few things properly from day one:

•             Use a certified kit: Choose a GVM upgrade that’s engineered for your exact Hilux and supplied with compliance documentation.

•             Use an authorised installer: Our GVM kits are only shipped to certified dealers and fitted by authorised, approved Fulcrum workshops.

•             Keep every document: Store the engineering certificate, mod plate details, invoice and fitting report with your service records.

•             Stay inside the new limits: Running over your upgraded GVM or axle ratings gives a manufacturer and an insurer reasons to question a claim.

•             Keep up the servicing: Follow Toyota’s service schedule and book your complimentary 1000km check-up at a Fulcrum Service Centre after the upgrade.

What About Toyota’s Factory GVM Option?

For new N90 Hilux buyers, Toyota now offers a factory-fitted GVM option on six work-focused grades, raising GVM to 3500kg. Toyota says this option retains the full five year factory warranty.

It’s a good choice if you’re buying one of those grades and the 3500kg rating suits your load. If you need a higher rating, more lift or adjustable damping, or you own an N70, N80 or already registered N90, an aftermarket kit is the practical way forward. Our guide to the Toyota Hilux factory GVM upgrade compares both side by side.

Does a GVM Upgrade Affect Insurance?

GVM upgrade insurance comes down to two things: declaring the upgrade and staying inside the new limit. Most insurers expect modifications that change a vehicle’s ratings or suspension to be declared, and a GVM upgrade does both. Failing to declare it could give an insurer grounds to reduce or refuse a claim.

The bigger insurance risk is running over GVM. If you’re involved in an accident while your Hilux is over its legal weight limit, an insurer may dispute the claim. A declared, certified GVM upgrade puts your load back inside a legal rating, which is a far stronger position than driving over a factory limit.

Call your insurer before or straight after the upgrade, give them the new GVM, and keep the engineering documents handy in case they ask.

Other Legal Points Worth Knowing

•             Interstate moves: If you re-register a post-rego upgraded Hilux in another state, check whether the new state needs the upgrade signed off again.

•             Licence class: Hilux GVM upgrades top out well under 4500kg GVM, so a standard car licence still applies, with licence requirements only changing above 4500kg.

•             Changing parts later: Swapping springs or shocks specified in the kit, or changing the approved ride height, can invalidate the GVM approval, so talk to us before making changes.
