You need a GVM upgrade on your Hilux if it weighs more than its factory GVM when loaded the way you normally drive, or if it’s close enough that adding passengers, water or a trailer would push it over. The only reliable way to know is to weigh it, ideally axle by axle. If you’re well under, a matched suspension upgrade may be all you need.
“Do I need a GVM upgrade?” is one of the most common questions our Service Centres hear from Hilux owners. The honest answer is that it depends on your real weight, and plenty of people are surprised either way. Some are well over GVM without knowing it, while others are spending money on an upgrade they don’t need. Here’s how to tell, and what to do next. If you do need one, our certified GVM upgrades cover the N70, N80 and N90 Hilux.
What Does a GVM Upgrade Do?
If you’ve typed “what is GVM upgrade” or “what does GVM upgrade mean” into a search bar, here’s the plain answer. A GVM upgrade raises the maximum legal weight of your Hilux above the factory rating. It has two parts that both need to be in place: engineered springs and shocks rated to carry and control the extra load, and the engineering approval that records the new figure on your vehicle.
On most N80 Hilux 4x4 models, a GVM upgrade takes the rating from 3050kg to 3501kg, while on the N90 it goes to 3571kg. That’s around 450kg to 500kg more legal payload, depending on the model. Heavier springs fitted without certification won’t change your legal GVM.
Signs Your Hilux Might Need a GVM Upgrade
Your Hilux will usually tell you it’s carrying too much. Watch for these signs when your Hilux is loaded:
• The rear sits low: A visible sag at the back when loaded, or headlights pointing skyward at night.
• Bottoming out: The suspension hits the bump stops over dips, gutters and corrugations.
• Excessive bouncing: The rear keeps moving after a bump instead of settling.
• Vague steering and more vehicle sway: The Hilux feels nervous in corners, crosswinds or when trucks pass.
• Uneven tyre wear: Overloading changes your alignment and wears tyres faster.
• A long list of accessories: Bull bar, winch, canopy, drawers, fridge, long range tank, roof rack and recovery gear add up fast.
Any one of these is a reason to put your Hilux on the scales.

How to Check Whether Your Hilux Is Over GVM
Load your Hilux exactly as you drive it on a typical trip, with passengers, a full tank, water, tools and gear, then weigh it at a public weighbridge.

Compare your totals with the GVM and axle ratings on your compliance plate. If you’re over, or within about 100kg of GVM before adding everything you’d carry on a longer trip, a GVM upgrade is worth serious consideration. Not sure what your rating is? Why Getting It Wrong Matters
Police and transport authorities do weigh 4WDs, particularly touring rigs. Victoria Police reportedly ran more than 1,200 weighbridge operations in a single year with a failure rate of around 23 per cent.
Being over GVM can mean fines, a defect notice and a vehicle that’s legally unroadworthy. It can also give an insurer grounds to dispute a claim after an accident. Mechanically, overloading lengthens braking distances, increases vehicle sway and speeds up wear on suspension, brakes, tyres and the drivetrain.
When You Might Not Need a GVM Upgrade
A GVM upgrade isn’t the answer for every Hilux. You may not need a GVM upgrade if any of these apply:
• You’re well under GVM: If your weighbridge result leaves a comfortable margin, a quality suspension upgrade matched to your load can improve ride and control without the cost of certification.
• Your problem is GCM: If you’re towing heavy with a loaded ute, the combined limit may be your real issue, and most GVM upgrades don’t raise GCM, as our guide to the Hilux GCM explains.
• You can lighten the load: Swapping a steel bar for alloy, trimming water or moving gear into the trailer can sometimes bring you back inside the limit.
If you’re close to GVM now and planning more accessories, a pre-rego upgrade on a new Hilux or a post-rego upgrade on your current one is usually cheaper than squeezing under the limit every trip.
Is a GVM Upgrade Worth It on a Hilux?
For a Hilux that’s genuinely carrying a work or touring load, yes. You get legal capacity for the gear you already carry, along with a suspension that controls that weight properly. Matched springs and shocks cut rear sag, steady the ride over corrugations and keep braking and steering more predictable with a full tray.
At Fulcrum, Hilux GVM upgrades start at $5,655 fully fitted for pre-rego N80 vehicles. See our full breakdown of Toyota Hilux GVM upgrade cost for every generation.
Toyota Hilux GVM Upgrade FAQs
Looking for more information about whether your Toyota Hilux needs a GVM upgrade and what it means for payload, cost and ride? Below we answer the most commonly asked questions.
How do I know if I need a GVM upgrade?
Weigh your Hilux loaded as you normally drive it. If it’s over its GVM or axle ratings, or very close with more gear planned, you need a GVM upgrade.
What is a GVM upgrade?
A GVM upgrade is an engineered and certified suspension package that legally raises your vehicle’s gross vehicle mass above the factory figure, increasing payload.
What does a GVM upgrade mean for my Hilux’s payload?
On most N80 Hilux 4x4 models it means 451kg more legal payload, and on the N90 it means 451kg to 506kg more.
What’s a GVM upgrade going to cost on a Hilux?
At Fulcrum, Hilux GVM upgrades start at $5,655 fully fitted for pre-rego N80 vehicles and reach $9,140 for the N90 F4R kit.
Is a GVM upgrade worth it?
For a Hilux carrying a heavy work or touring load, it’s the only legal way to keep carrying that weight, and it improves stability and control under load.
Can I get a GVM upgrade on an older Hilux?
Yes, we fit certified GVM upgrades to the 2005 to 2015 N70 Hilux outside Queensland, the 2015 to 2025 N80 and the N90 from 2025.
Can I just fit heavy duty springs instead?
Heavy duty springs can help the ride under load, but they don’t change your legal GVM, which only a certified GVM upgrade can do.
Where can I weigh my Hilux?
Public weighbridges are available across Australia for a small fee. Fulcrum’s GVM & Towing Assessment also includes a 4 point weight check for $90.
Will a GVM upgrade make my Hilux ride harsh when empty?
Stiffer springs are needed to carry more weight, so an empty Hilux will feel firmer. Adjustable kits like the Formula 4x4 F4R let you soften the damping for unladen driving.
