A Hilux GVM upgrade involves a consultation on your load and use, choosing an engineered kit, professional fitting of new springs, shocks and supporting parts, a wheel alignment, and engineering certification with a compliance or modification plate. With Fulcrum, most installs happen within two weeks of ordering, and we handle the paperwork for you.
If you’ve never had one before, what is involved in a GVM upgrade can look complicated from the outside. In practice, it’s a structured job with a clear sequence, and most of the hard parts are handled by the workshop and the engineer. Here’s exactly what’s involved in a Hilux GVM upgrade with Fulcrum Suspensions, from the first conversation to driving away legally rated. You can browse every kit in our GVM upgrades range.
Step 1: Understanding Your Load and How You Use Your Hilux
Every Hilux GVM upgrade starts with understanding the load. We need to know what’s permanently fitted to your Hilux, such as a bull bar, winch, canopy, drawers, dual battery system, water tanks and recovery gear, plus what you carry day to day and what you tow.
That information decides which kit and spring rate suit your Hilux. A tradie with a heavy service body needs a different setup from a tourer who runs lighter during the week and fully loaded on holidays.
If you don’t know your current weight, start with our $90 GVM & Towing Assessment. We weigh each corner, check where you sit against GVM and GCM, and give you a written recommendation.
Step 2: Choosing the Right Hilux GVM Upgrade Kit
Hilux GVM upgrade kits are engineered for a specific generation, so the first filter is your model. We offer kits for the N70 (2005 to 2015), N80 (2015 to 2025) and N90 (2025 onwards) Hilux, with ratings from 3300kg to 3571kg.
Within each generation, you’ll usually choose between a standard kit and a premium adjustable kit. The Formula 4x4 F4R kits use remote reservoir shocks with separate compression and rebound adjustment, ideal if you swap between empty and loaded running or spend long days on corrugations. See our guide to Toyota Hilux GVM upgrade cost for a side by side price comparison.

Step 3: Ordering and Booking Your GVM Upgrade
GVM upgrade kits can only be shipped to certified dealers and fitted by an authorised, approved Fulcrum workshop, because the certification depends on the specified parts being installed correctly.
With our Click & Fit service, you buy the kit online, choose your preferred Fulcrum installer, and select whether your Hilux is pre-rego or post-rego. A Fulcrum specialist then calls to confirm your vehicle details, permanent load, towing needs and intended use before the order is processed. Your kit is delivered to the workshop and your install date is booked, with most installs completed within two weeks.
Step 4: What Does a GVM Upgrade Involve in the Workshop?
On the day, a qualified technician removes your factory suspension and installs the components set out in the kit. Using the Formula 4x4 3501kg kit for the N80 Hilux as an example, the kit includes:
|
Component |
What it does |
|
Formula 4x4 ReadyStrut front strut assemblies |
Carry and control the higher front axle load at the correct height |
|
Big bore rear shock absorbers |
Control the stiffer springs and resist heat fade under load |
|
Heavy duty rear leaf springs |
Support the higher rear axle load and reduce sag |
|
High tensile U-bolts |
Clamp the new leaf springs securely to the axle |
|
Shackle, pin and bush kit |
Locates the leaf springs with fresh, durable bushes |
|
Brake line spacer kit |
Gives the rear brake line room for the extra suspension travel |
|
Category 6 side indicators |
Specified for the Hilux at its upgraded mass |
|
Tyre placard and load capacity label |
Show the revised axle and load ratings |
|
Document kit |
Supports the engineering and compliance process |
N90 kits also include an upper control arm kit to keep the front geometry correct at the lifted height, and an upper control arm kit is recommended for post-rego N80 vehicles.
Step 5: Wheel Alignment, Checks and Ride Height
Once the parts are in, the ride height is set, the Hilux is test driven, and a full wheel alignment brings the steering and tyre angles back into specification. Most Formula 4x4 kits give a 40mm to 50mm lift on a loaded vehicle, with a little more height when it’s empty.
Our Click & Fit installations also include a full suspension check, a visual brake inspection and a written report.
Step 6: Engineering, Certification and the Mod Plate
This is the step that turns new suspension into a legal GVM. The certification path depends on whether your Hilux is registered yet.
• Pre-rego Hilux: The upgrade is completed before first registration and the higher GVM forms part of the vehicle’s compliance from the outset. Engineering is included at no extra charge with us.
• Post-rego Hilux: An engineer inspects the installation, signs it off and issues a modification plate, and your registered vehicle data is updated, which adds $1,265.
Until the certification is complete, your factory GVM still applies. Keep every document with the vehicle, as your insurer, a future buyer or an inspector may ask for it.
Step 7: Your 1000km Check-Up
After you’ve driven around 1000km, bring your Hilux back to a Fulcrum Service Centre for a complimentary check-up. We recheck the suspension, retighten anything that needs it, and look at your alignment and tyre wear, fixing anything required free of charge. U-bolts on new leaf springs need re-tensioning as they settle, which is one reason this check matters.
Toyota Hilux GVM Upgrade Process FAQs
Looking for more information about how a Toyota Hilux GVM upgrade works, from booking to fitting and certification? Below we answer the most commonly asked questions.
How long does a GVM upgrade take?
Most Fulcrum GVM installs are booked within two weeks of ordering. Your Service Centre will confirm how long it needs your Hilux on the day, based on the kit and your vehicle.
What does a GVM upgrade include?
A Hilux GVM upgrade includes engineered springs, shocks and front struts rated for the higher mass, supporting hardware, compliance labels, a wheel alignment and engineering certification.
How do you get a GVM upgrade?
Here’s how to get a GVM upgrade: choose a certified kit for your Hilux, have it fitted by an authorised installer, and complete the engineering and certification. With Fulcrum, you can do it all through Click & Fit.
What’s involved in a GVM upgrade on a 2026 Hilux?
The same steps apply to the N90, and both Formula 4x4 N90 kits include an upper control arm kit as standard. Toyota’s factory option is fitted at the factory instead.
Can any mechanic fit a GVM upgrade?
No, GVM kits must be fitted by an authorised, approved installer so the engineering and certification remain valid.
Do I need to take my Hilux to the transport department?
For post-rego upgrades, the engineer’s certification and new mod plate are used to update your registered details. Your installer will explain what’s lodged and when your new GVM applies.
Do I need to book a separate wheel alignment?
There’s no need for a separate booking, as a full wheel alignment is part of every Fulcrum GVM upgrade installation and is included in the fitted price.
What happens if I change parts after the upgrade?
Swapping out components specified in the GVM kit can invalidate the approval. Talk to us before changing springs, shocks or ride height on an upgraded Hilux.
