The GVM of a Toyota Hilux 4x4 dual cab is about 3050kg on the 2015 to 2025 N80, between 3065kg and 3120kg on the N90 from 2025, and roughly 2710kg to 2780kg on the 2005 to 2015 N70. Your exact figure is on the compliance plate. A certified GVM upgrade can lift the N80 to 3501kg and the N90 to 3571kg.

Toyota Hilux GVM, or gross vehicle mass, is the most your Hilux is legally allowed to weigh fully loaded. That includes the vehicle itself, fuel, passengers, accessories, cargo and the download from a trailer on the towball. Once you know your Hilux GVM, you know how much room you’ve actually got to work with, and whether your setup needs one of our certified GVM upgrades.

Toyota Hilux GVM by Generation and Model

The GVM of a Toyota Hilux depends on the generation, drivetrain and body style. These are typical figures for 4x4 models from published Australian specifications.

Hilux generation

Years

Typical 4x4 GVM

Notes

N70 (KUN26, GGN25)

2005 to 2015

2710kg to 2780kg dual cab, about 2810kg single cab chassis

Braked towing 2250kg early, 2500kg later

N80 (GUN126, GUN136, GGN125)

2015 to 2025

3000kg early dual cabs, 3050kg on most later models

SR, SR5, Rogue and GR Sport all 3050kg

N90 (GUN226, GUN227)

2025 on

3065kg to 3120kg

4x2 models 2950kg to 2980kg

Two Hilux models that look the same can carry different GVM ratings, so treat this table as a guide and check your own plate before you load up or tow. Use it to compare the N70 Hilux GVM, N80 Hilux GVM and N90 Hilux GVM against your vehicle.

What is the GVM of the 2026 Toyota Hilux?

The 2026 Hilux GVM ranges from 3065kg to 3120kg on 4x4 models, depending on grade, for the new N90 that went on sale in December 2025. The SR5 4x4 automatic dual cab pick-up is rated at 3120kg, while the SR double cab chassis sits at 3080kg.

What is the GVM of an N80 Hilux SR5?

The N80 Hilux SR5 GVM is 3050kg on most 4x4 dual cabs. Early 2015 and 2016 models were rated at 3000kg, so a 2016 Hilux GVM can differ from a 2021 Hilux GVM or 2022 Hilux GVM even on the same badge.

What is the GVM of the Hilux Rogue and GR Sport?

The N80 Hilux Rogue GVM is 3050kg, shared with the wide-track GR Sport, but both are heavier than an SR5. That leaves the GR Sport with around 780kg of payload and the Rogue with about 819kg.

Where Do You Find Your Hilux GVM?

Your Toyota Hilux GVM is printed on the vehicle’s compliance information, usually on a plate or label in the driver’s door jamb or engine bay, and it’s listed in the owner’s manual. If your Hilux has already had a GVM upgrade, it will carry a separate modification plate or revised compliance plate showing the new figure.

The GVM Toyota Hilux owners see on that plate is what counts at a weighbridge. Fitting heavier springs alone doesn’t change it, however much weight the suspension can physically hold.

GVM, Kerb Weight and Payload: How They Fit Together

Your payload is the gap between your Hilux’s kerb weight and its GVM. Kerb weight is the vehicle ready to drive with fluids and a full tank, before you add people or gear.

Take an N80 SR5 dual cab ute at about 2110kg kerb and a 3050kg GVM. That leaves roughly 940kg of payload to work with. Every accessory comes out of that number first, before your passengers, water, tools and camping gear. We break this down further in our guide to Hilux payload capacity.

Axle limits matter too, as your Hilux can sit under its total GVM and still be over the rear axle rating if the weight is concentrated behind the cab, which is common with canopies, drawers and towball download.

How Much Can the GVM of a Toyota Hilux Be Increased?

A certified GVM upgrade raises your Hilux’s legal maximum above the factory figure. These are the upgraded GVM ratings available through Fulcrum Suspensions.

Toyota also offers a factory GVM option to 3500kg on selected N90 grades ordered new from mid 2026. Our Toyota Hilux GVM upgrades cover the older generations and give N90 owners a higher rating with more lift.

Each of our upgrades is engineered and certified, supplied with compliance documentation, and fitted by an authorised Fulcrum workshop. Pre-rego upgrades include the engineering at no extra charge with us.

Why Your Hilux GVM Matters More Than You Think

The Hilux is a great work and touring ute, but its payload disappears quickly. A steel bull bar, winch, dual battery system, towbar, canopy and drawers can use several hundred kilos before anyone gets in.

Running over GVM, Hilux or otherwise, affects braking distances, steering feel and vehicle sway, and it puts extra wear on the suspension, brakes and drivetrain. It can also lead to fines, defect notices and trouble with an insurance claim.

If you’re unsure where you sit, our GVM & Towing Assessment includes a 4 point weight check, a GVM and GCM assessment and a 100+ point inspection for $90.
