Most Toyota Hilux 4x4 dual cabs have a payload capacity of roughly 780kg to 1080kg, depending on generation and grade. Payload is your GVM minus kerb weight, and accessories, passengers, fuel and towball download all come out of it. A certified GVM upgrade adds around 450kg to 500kg of legal payload.

Hilux payload, sometimes called Toyota Hilux load capacity, is the number that decides how much you can legally put in, on and behind your ute. It sounds generous on paper, but a set of touring or trade accessories can eat half of it before you’ve packed a single bag. Here’s how to work out your real Toyota Hilux payload, and when one of our certified GVM upgrades becomes the practical answer.

Toyota Hilux Payload by Model

Toyota Hilux payload capacity changes with every generation, cab style and grade. Heavier wide-track and premium grades carry less, while cab chassis models usually carry more.

Figures come from published Australian specifications and vary by transmission and options. The payload on your Hilux is whatever is left after your own accessories, so the weighbridge always has the final word.

How to Work Out Your Real Hilux Payload Capacity

Working it out is simple, as payload equals GVM minus kerb weight. The catch is that kerb weight is measured on a standard vehicle, and very few Hilux utes stay standard for long.

Here’s how quickly a 940kg Hilux SR5 payload shrinks with a typical touring build. Accessory weights are approximate and vary by brand.

150kg

That 150kg has to cover water, food, recovery gear, tools, clothing and camping equipment. For many touring and trade setups, it simply isn’t enough, which is why so many loaded Hilux utes end up over GVM without their owners realising.

Does Hilux Payload Change When You Tow?

Yes, and this catches plenty of people out. Towball download counts against your payload, so a 3500kg trailer with a 350kg towball load takes 350kg straight off what the Hilux can carry.

Gross combination mass, or GCM, can reduce it further. The N80 Hilux has a 5850kg GCM, so towing 3500kg leaves 2350kg for the loaded ute. On a GR Sport, that works out to about 80kg of payload at maximum towing. The new N90 lifted 4x4 GCM to 6300kg, which lets an SR5 automatic keep around 615kg of payload while towing 3500kg. We explain this in detail in our guide to the Hilux GCM.

How a GVM Upgrade Increases Hilux Payload

A GVM upgrade raises the legal maximum weight of your Hilux, which raises your payload by the same amount. The suspension is upgraded to carry and control that extra load, then engineered and certified so the new figure is recorded on your vehicle.

On the touring example above, a 3501kg upgrade turns 150kg of spare payload into about 600kg. That’s room for the gear you actually travel with, carried legally.

The kits we fit for the Hilux use matched springs and shocks designed for the higher load, with heavy duty leaf springs at the rear and upgraded front struts. You get less rear sag, better vehicle sway control and more stable braking when the tray is full. Signs Your Hilux Is Close to Its Payload Limit

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting your Hilux weighed:

•             Rear sag: The tail sits noticeably lower than the nose when loaded.

•             Bottoming out: The suspension hits the bump stops over dips and rough roads.

•             Floaty or nervous handling: The Hilux wallows over bumps or feels vague in corners and crosswinds.

•             Uneven tyre wear: Overloading changes alignment angles and wears tyres faster than normal.

Our GVM & Towing Assessment weighs each corner of your Hilux, checks GVM and GCM, and includes a 100+ point inspection with a written report for $90.

Toyota Hilux Payload FAQs

Looking for more information about Toyota Hilux payload and load capacity? Below we answer the most commonly asked questions.

What is the payload of a Toyota Hilux?

Most Toyota Hilux 4x4 dual cabs have a payload of about 780kg to 1080kg. Cab chassis models usually carry more, while the wide-track Rogue and GR Sport carry less.

How much weight can a Hilux carry in the tray?

There’s no separate tray limit on most utes. Everything in the tray counts against your total payload and the rear axle limit, so heavy loads behind the rear axle can push you over the axle rating first.

What is the payload of the 2026 Hilux SR5?

The 2026 Hilux payload on the SR5 4x4 automatic dual cab pick-up is about 965kg, from a 3120kg GVM and a kerb weight of about 2155kg.

Do passengers count towards Hilux payload?

Yes, passengers, the driver, fuel above the kerb weight allowance, accessories, cargo and towball download all count towards your Hilux payload.

What is the load capacity of Toyota Hilux cab chassis models?

Cab chassis models generally have the highest payload. The 2026 Hilux SR 4x4 dual cab chassis, for example, carries about 1080kg standard.

How much does a GVM upgrade add to Hilux payload?

A 3501kg upgrade adds 451kg to most N80 4x4 models. A 3571kg upgrade adds 451kg to 506kg on the N90, depending on the factory GVM.

What is the payload of a Hilux workmate?

Hilux WorkMate payload depends on cab style and drivetrain, and cab chassis versions carry more than pick-ups. Check the compliance plate or Toyota’s spec table for your exact model.
