Isuzu D-Max payload capacity ranges from about 900kg to 1350kg across the current range, with most 4x4 dual cabs carrying around 1000kg. Payload is the 3100kg GVM minus kerb weight, but the D-Max’s 1450kg front and 1910kg rear axle limits matter just as much. A 3700kg GVM upgrade adds 600kg of legal payload.

Ask ten D-Max owners for their Dmax payload and most will quote the brochure figure. The trouble is that figure applies to a bare ute. By the time the bull bar, canopy, drawers and fridge are on, the real Isuzu D-Max payload capacity is often half what you started with, and one axle can hit its limit long before the GVM does. Here’s how to work out your actual number. When you need more, our certified Isuzu D-Max GVM upgrades are the legal fix.

Lighter single cab and 4x2 models sit at the top of the range, while heavily equipped 4x4 dual cabs like the X-Terrain sit lower. For the Isuzu Dmax payload on your exact vehicle, use the kerb weight on your own compliance information or, better still, a weighbridge ticket.

Why Axle Payload Matters on a D-Max

Most payload guides stop at GVM minus kerb weight. On a D-Max, you also need to look at how that payload is split between the front and rear axles.

Front axle

1450kg

1650kg

Rear axle

2050kg

Once the trailer drops below about 2900kg, the factory GVM becomes your limit instead of GCM, which is where a GVM upgrade starts to pay off.

Front axle payload on the Isuzu D-Max

A steel bull bar, winch, recovery points, driving lights and a second battery all sit over or ahead of the front wheels. Together they can add well over 100kg to the front axle before the driver and front passenger get in. On a touring D-Max, the 1450kg front rating is often the first limit reached.

Rear axle payload on the Isuzu D-Max

Weight behind the rear axle has a lever effect, pressing harder on the rear wheels and lifting load off the front. A canopy, drawer system, water tank, spare wheel carrier and a 250kg to 350kg towball download all stack up quickly against the 1910kg rear rating.

That’s why a D-Max can pass on total weight and still fail on an axle. When we weigh a ute during a GVM & Towing Assessment, we record each corner for exactly this reason.

A Real World D-Max Payload Example

Here’s how quickly a 995kg payload disappears on a 2025 D-Max LS-U set up for touring. Accessory weights are typical estimates and vary by brand.

How a GVM Upgrade Adds D-Max Payload

A 3700kg GVM upgrade on a 2021 to 2024 D-Max adds 600kg of legal payload and lifts both axle ratings, so the extra capacity is usable front and rear. In the example above, the remaining 240kg becomes 840kg.

The Formula 4x4 kits we fit combine upgraded front struts, heavy duty FLS-150 rear leaf springs, matched shocks and an upper control arm kit to keep the geometry right at the new height. You get less rear sag, better vehicle sway control and steadier braking with a full load. For earlier D-Max models from 2012, our Lovells kits raise GVM to 3600kg.

See every option in our Isuzu D-Max GVM upgrades range, and compare prices in our guide to Isuzu D-Max GVM upgrade cost. Our guide to the D-Max GVM covers the factory ratings for every generation, and if you tow, our Isuzu D-Max GCM guide explains how a trailer cuts into your payload.

Can You Get a D-Max GCM Upgrade in Your State?

The Lovells GCM ratings we supply apply in NSW and Victoria. Outside those states, the kits still deliver their GVM increase, but the GCM figure may not carry across, so talk to a Fulcrum specialist before you order.

If you’re doing a post-registration GCM upgrade, the Lovells upper control arm kit is compulsory. It adds $1,095 and keeps your wheel alignment and front end geometry correct at the new ride height, while post-registration engineering adds a further $1,265.

Like any Isuzu Dmax GCM upgrade, it needs engineering approval and certification to be legal, and the paperwork stays with the vehicle.

What helps

Heavy van, loaded ute

GCM

A Lovells GCM kit in NSW or VIC, a lighter trailer or a lighter ute

Light camper, loaded ute

GVM

A 3700kg or 3600kg GVM upgrade

Heavy canopy and drawers

Rear axle

A GVM upgrade with higher axle ratings, or moving weight forward

Bull bar, winch and lights

Front axle

A GVM upgrade with a higher front axle rating

The only way to know for sure is to weigh the ute and trailer separately, axle by axle. Our $90 GVM & Towing Assessment does exactly that, with a 100+ point inspection and written report. If GVM rather than GCM is your issue, start with our guide to the D-Max GVM. Our guide to Isuzu D-Max payload capacity shows how that load splits between the axles, and our D-Max GVM upgrade cost guide covers the fitted price of each kit.

FAQs

Looking for more information about the Isuzu D-Max payload? Below we answer the most commonly asked questions

What is the payload of an Isuzu D-Max?

Most current Isuzu D-Max 4x4 dual cabs carry around 1000kg, with the wider range spanning about 900kg to 1350kg depending on cab, drivetrain and grade.

What is the 2025 D-Max LS-U payload?

The 2025 D-Max LS-U 4x4 crew cab ute has a payload of about 995kg, from a 3100kg GVM and a kerb weight of about 2105kg.

What are the D-Max front and rear axle limits?

The current D-Max 4x4 is rated at 1450kg on the front axle and 1910kg on the rear axle. A Formula 4x4 3700kg upgrade raises these to 1650kg and 2050kg.

Does a bull bar affect D-Max payload?

Yes, a steel bull bar and winch can use more than 100kg of payload and load the front axle heavily, which is often the first limit a touring D-Max reaches.

How much payload does a D-Max GVM upgrade add?

A 3700kg GVM upgrade adds 600kg of payload to a 2021 to 2024 D-Max. Lovells 3600kg kits add 500kg to current models and 650kg to the 2012 to 2020 D-Max.

Does towball download count against D-Max payload?

It does, and it loads the rear axle hardest. A 350kg towball load takes 350kg straight off your payload and adds weight behind the rear wheels.
