Mazda BT-50 payload runs from up to 887kg on a Thunder 4x4 dual cab to up to 1236kg on an XS 4x2 single cab chassis. Mazda’s online payload calculator gives the figure for your model, but trays, bull bars and towbars all come off it. A certified 3700kg GVM upgrade adds 600kg to a BT-50 4x4 from 2022.

Most BT-50 owners only discover their real payload when they put the loaded ute on a weighbridge. The brochure figure assumes a standard vehicle, and the moment a tray, canopy or towbar goes on, BT50 payload starts shrinking. Here’s how to calculate your number properly using Mazda’s own tools and a few simple steps, and how our certified Mazda BT-50 GVM upgrades give you more of it legally.

Treat these figures as starting points, because your actual Mazda BT50 payload depends on everything fitted after the vehicle left the factory.

Using the BT-50 Payload Calculator

Mazda Australia offers an online payload calculator that shows the kerb weight, GVM and payload for each BT-50 variant, and it’s the best place to start. Here’s how to turn its figure into a real world number.

  1. Find your base payload: Select your exact BT-50 model in the Mazda BT50 payload calculator and note the payload figure.
  2. Subtract fitted accessories: Take off the weight of your tray or canopy, bull bar, winch, towbar, roof rack, drawers and any extra batteries.
  3. Subtract people: Allow for the driver and every regular passenger.
  4. Subtract towball download: If you tow, take off the trailer’s towball load, up to 350kg on a BT-50.
  5. Weigh it to confirm: Load the ute as you travel and check it on a weighbridge, axle by axle.

What’s left is the payload you actually have for fuel above kerb weight, water, tools, food and gear.

Why Cab Chassis BT-50s Lose Payload Fast

Cab chassis models start with the highest payload, but the tray isn’t included. In CarsGuide’s test of a 2025 BT-50 XTR cab chassis, the 1190kg payload rating dropped to 891kg once the 243kg tray, a nudge bar and the towing kit were taken into account. That’s nearly 300kg gone before any tools or materials went in.

For a tradie running a steel tray with toolboxes, a ladder rack and a full load of materials, it’s easy to see how a BT-50 ends up over its 3100kg GVM on a normal working day.

How to Increase BT-50 Payload Legally

The only legal way to carry more is to raise the GVM with a certified upgrade, since heavier springs alone don’t change your rating.

The Formula 4x4 3700kg kits also raise the axle ratings from 1450kg to 1650kg at the front and from 1910kg to 2050kg at the rear. That matters on a BT-50, because a heavy tray and towball load pile weight onto the rear axle, while a bull bar and winch load up the front.

On the cab chassis example above, a 3700kg upgrade turns 891kg of usable payload into 1491kg. Matched springs, front struts and shocks also cut rear sag and vehicle sway, so the BT-50 drives with more control when it’s working hard. See the full Mazda BT-50 GVM upgrades range.

Not Sure Where Your BT-50 Sits?

If you’d rather not do the maths yourself, book a GVM & Towing Assessment at your nearest Fulcrum Service Centre. For $90, we weigh each corner of your BT-50, check it against GVM, axle and GCM limits, and give you a written recommendation. If you tow, our guide to the Mazda BT-50 GCM explains how the trailer affects your payload.

FAQs

Looking for more information about the Mazda BT-50 payload? Below we answer the most commonly asked questions

What is the payload of a Mazda BT-50?

Mazda quotes BT-50 payload from up to 887kg on the Thunder 4x4 dual cab automatic to up to 1236kg on the XS 4x2 single cab chassis automatic.

Where is the Mazda BT-50 payload calculator?

Mazda Australia’s online payload calculator is on the Mazda website, and it lists kerb weight, GVM and payload for each BT-50 variant.

Does the tray count against BT-50 payload?

It does, and on cab chassis models it’s a big deduction. A 243kg tray took a 2025 BT-50 XTR cab chassis from a 1190kg rating to under 900kg with a nudge bar and towing kit.

How much does a GVM upgrade add to BT-50 payload?

A 3700kg Formula 4x4 or Bilstein GVM upgrade adds 600kg to a BT-50 4x4 from 2022, while Lovells 3600kg kits add 500kg.

What is the BT-50 payload when towing?

Towball download comes straight off your payload, and the GCM limits how heavy the ute can be with a trailer hitched. On a MY25 BT-50 towing 3500kg, the loaded ute can’t exceed 2500kg.

Do accessories reduce BT-50 payload?

Every accessory fitted after the factory, including bull bars, towbars, canopies, trays and roof racks, comes straight off your payload.
