Non-Power Fold Towing Mirrors

Non-power fold towing mirrors provide additional rearward visibility when towing caravans, trailers, boats and other wide loads, without an electrically operated folding function. Designed to replace the original side mirrors, they combine everyday driving visibility with an extended position for towing.

Unlike temporary clip-on mirror extensions, replacement towing mirrors mount directly to the vehicle in place of the original mirrors. When extra visibility is required, the mirrors can be extended outwards to increase the field of view alongside the load being towed. When towing is finished, they can return to a more compact position for everyday driving.

Non-power fold towing mirrors are available with different functions depending on the application, making correct fitment and feature selection important.

What Are Non-Power Fold Towing Mirrors?

The term "non-power fold" refers specifically to the mirror's folding function.

Power fold towing mirrors use an electric mechanism to fold the mirror housing towards the vehicle. Non-power fold towing mirrors do not have this electrically operated folding function.

This does not necessarily mean that all other mirror adjustments are manual.

Depending on the application, non-power fold towing mirrors may retain electric mirror adjustment and other compatible functions. Other versions may use manual adjustment. Available features vary according to the towing mirror and the original vehicle equipment, so individual product specifications should always be checked.

The towing extension itself is also separate from the power-fold function. Non-power fold towing mirrors can still extend outwards to provide the additional viewing position required when towing.

Better Visibility When Towing

One of the main reasons for fitting towing mirrors is to improve visibility around a caravan, trailer or other wide load.

A load that extends beyond the sides of the tow vehicle can restrict the view available through standard side mirrors. Extendable towing mirrors move the viewing position further out from the vehicle, helping provide a clearer view alongside and behind the load.

When towing, the mirrors can be extended into their towing position. Once the load is disconnected, they can be returned to their standard driving position.

Adjustable viewing angles also allow the mirror position to be set for the driver and towing setup.

Good visibility is an important part of safe towing, so towing mirrors should be positioned correctly before starting a journey and adjusted whenever the towing setup changes.

Non-Power Fold vs Power Fold Towing Mirrors

The main difference between these two types of towing mirrors is how the mirror housing folds.

Power fold towing mirrors use an electric folding mechanism on compatible vehicles. Non-power fold towing mirrors require the folding movement to be performed manually.

This distinction should not be confused with mirror-glass adjustment. A non-power fold towing mirror can still offer electric mirror adjustment where supported by the particular product and vehicle.

Choosing between power fold and non-power fold towing mirrors therefore depends partly on the functions already fitted to your vehicle and the features you want to retain.

If electric folding is not required or supported by your application, a non-power fold towing mirror can provide the extended towing visibility you need without the additional power-fold mechanism.

Choosing the Right Towing Mirrors

Towing mirrors are vehicle-specific, so correct fitment should be the first consideration.

Start by checking the make, model, series and year of your vehicle, then compare the functions of the original mirrors with the specifications of the replacement towing mirrors.

Depending on the application, features can include electric adjustment, heating, indicators and blind-spot monitoring. These functions are not included with every non-power fold towing mirror, so check the individual product details rather than assuming a feature will be retained.

Also consider the type of towing you do. An extendable towing mirror can be particularly useful when the caravan, trailer or other load is wider than the tow vehicle and additional rearward visibility is required.

If you are unsure which mirror configuration matches your vehicle, confirm fitment and available functions before purchasing.

Replacement Towing Mirrors for Everyday Driving

Towing mirrors are not only used while the vehicle is actively towing.

Replacement extendable towing mirrors are designed to transition between a normal driving position and an extended towing position. This allows them to remain fitted to the vehicle rather than installing and removing temporary mirror extensions whenever you tow.

When additional visibility is required, the mirrors extend outwards. When the vehicle is no longer towing, they can be returned closer to the vehicle for normal driving.

Non-power fold models can also be manually folded inwards where their design allows, which can be useful when parking or travelling through tighter spaces.

Regularly check the mirrors, mounting points and adjustment mechanisms and follow the manufacturer's instructions for operation and maintenance.
