A strut mount is the assembly at the very top of a strut, bolting it to the body of your Interceptor Retro COMMODORE and taking the load of that corner through the shell.

Also called a strut top, top hat or upper strut mount, it is a component most owners never think about until it starts making noise or the alignment stops holding.

Complete Interceptor Retro COMMODORE Strut Mounts or Just the Bush

Two levels of repair exist here, and the right one depends on the design fitted to your Interceptor Retro COMMODORE.

Some vehicles use a mount where the rubber bush is a serviceable item, pressed into a housing that remains on the vehicle. On those, replacing the bush alone is a legitimate repair when the housing and the bearing are both sound.

More commonly the mount is supplied as a complete assembly, with the rubber bonded to the steel housing and the bearing integrated. On those designs there is nothing to separate, and the whole unit is replaced as one.

Check which you have before ordering, since a bush kit will not help on a bonded assembly and a complete mount is unnecessary expense if only the bush has perished.

The complete assembly is the more common purchase by a wide margin, mainly because the bond between rubber and steel is what usually fails.

Front and Rear Interceptor Retro COMMODORE Strut Mounts Are Different Parts

The two ends of the vehicle use mounts that look similar and do different jobs.

A front strut mount contains a bearing, because the entire strut assembly rotates as the wheel steers. That bearing is what allows the movement, and it is the component that produces the creak or notchy steering feel when it goes.

A rear strut mount on most vehicles has no bearing, since nothing at the back steers. It handles load and isolation only, which makes it a simpler component with fewer ways to fail.

That difference explains why fronts are replaced more often than rears, and why front mounts cost more. It also means a quote for one pair tells you nothing about the other.

Some performance and sports variants use different mounts again on the same model, so checking the specification rather than assuming is worth the moment it takes.

Standard, Heavy Duty and Adjustable Strut Tops for the Interceptor Retro COMMODORE

Beyond direct replacement, a few options exist depending on what the vehicle does.

Standard replacement mounts restore the vehicle to how it left the factory, which is what the majority of passenger cars need.

Heavy duty versions use firmer rubber and stronger construction, suiting vehicles carrying permanent weight, towing regularly or covering rough surfaces where the standard item wears early.

Adjustable or camber correcting strut tops allow the top of the strut to be repositioned, which changes camber. Those are used where a vehicle has been lowered or lifted beyond what the factory adjustment can correct, and they turn the mount into an alignment component rather than just a locating one.

Raised strut mounts appear on some lift applications, designed to suit the geometry of a vehicle that no longer sits at standard height.

Which one suits comes down to what the vehicle carries and whether the ride height has changed.

Why Interceptor Retro COMMODORE Strut Mounts Wear Out

Mounts live in a difficult position and the reasons they fail are predictable.

The rubber is bonded to steel, and that bond is what eventually breaks down. Constant vibration works at it, heat cycling ages the rubber, and moisture and road salt attack the steel from the outside.

Load is the other factor working against it, because every bump the suspension absorbs passes through the mount into the body, and a vehicle that carries weight or covers rough roads puts more through it than one that does not.

The bearing in a front mount has its own failure mode. Grease dries out over time, water finds its way in, and the bearing starts to bind rather than turn freely.

None of that happens suddenly, which is why most people have been driving on a deteriorating mount for a long while before anything becomes obvious.

Interceptor Retro COMMODORE Strut Mount Replacement Cost and What Drives It

Strut mount replacement cost is dominated by access rather than by the part itself.

Reaching the mount means taking the strut out of the vehicle and releasing the spring, which is the same work involved in replacing the strut itself whether or not the strut is being changed.

Which is exactly why the cost changes so much depending on timing. Fitted during a strut replacement, the mount adds the price of the part and almost nothing else, since the assembly is already apart. Fitted as a standalone job, you are paying for the entire strut removal to change one component at the top of it.

Front costs more than rear on most vehicles, because the front assembly involves more work and the mount includes a bearing.

An alignment afterwards is worth building into the budget, since disturbing the top of the strut can move camber.

When to Replace Strut Mounts on Your Interceptor Retro COMMODORE

The clearest answer is whenever the struts are being replaced.

Both components have covered the same distance, both wear through vibration, and the labour to reach the mount is the labour already being paid for. Manufacturers recommend renewing the mount and bearing at every strut change for that reason.

Outside of a strut replacement, the triggers are the symptoms rather than a kilometre figure. Knocking from the top of the strut, a creak when turning the steering, steering that no longer returns to centre cleanly, or an alignment that will not hold are all reasons to inspect.

On a lifted or heavily loaded vehicle, inspect sooner than the general guidance suggests. Changing the angle the strut sits at and adding permanent weight both shorten the life of the mount.

Checking Strut Mounts Before You Order

A few checks narrow down whether the mount is the problem.

With the vehicle on the ground, have someone turn the steering slowly from lock to lock while you listen at the top of the strut. A creak, click or graunch in time with the movement points at the bearing.

Open the bonnet and look at the top of the strut where it passes through the tower. Visible cracking in the rubber, or rust staining around the mount, are both worth acting on.

Push down firmly on the corner and listen for a knock as the suspension moves. A mount that has separated will often make itself heard.

Then look back at the alignment history, since a vehicle that has needed repeated alignments with no worn arms or joints to explain it is frequently sitting on mounts that let the strut move under load.

Why Fitting a Strut Mount Means Releasing the Spring

The mount cannot be reached without releasing the coil spring, which makes this a job with real risk attached.

A compressed spring holds enough stored energy to cause serious injury if a compressor slips or is fitted incorrectly. That is the main reason this work belongs in a workshop rather than a driveway, and it is why pre assembled struts have become popular as an alternative.

Where the struts are being replaced anyway, a complete strut assembly arrives with a new mount and bearing already fitted, which removes the spring work entirely.

Replace mounts in pairs across an axle, since a new one on one side and a worn one on the other means the two corners isolate and steer differently.

Have the alignment set afterwards, and check the torque on the top nuts once everything is back together.

Since 1976 Fulcrum has been fitting suspension across 16 Service Centres and 200+ authorised workshops nationwide. Booking the mounts in alongside a strut replacement, with the alignment set in the same visit, is the efficient way to handle it.
