Read moreIndividual lower control arms for the E81, E82, E87, E88 1 are supplied singly rather than in pairs, for the left or right side as required.
They exist because one arm needing replacement while the other is perfectly serviceable is a normal outcome rather than an unusual one, and buying two when you need one is money spent for nothing.
When One Lower Control Arm Is the Right Purchase for Your E81, E82, E87, E88 1
A handful of situations genuinely call for a single arm.
Impact damage is the clearest of those situations. A kerb strike, a deep pothole or a low speed collision affects one corner, and an arm bent in that way is a single sided problem by definition.
A ball joint that has failed on one side while the other remains tight is the second case, common where one boot has split and the other has not. Boots tear as individual events rather than as a pair, so one corner contaminating while the other stays sealed is entirely normal.
The third is a vehicle where one side has already been replaced at some point, leaving a new arm on one corner and an original on the other.
Some vehicles also use left and right arms that differ from one another, so buying individually is the only way to order the specific side required.
Kerb Damage and Why It Bends One E81, E82, E87, E88 1 Lower Control Arm
This is where individual arms are most often needed, and it is worth knowing what to look for.
A vehicle that has struck something hard at one corner may show no visible damage at all. Arms bend before they break, and a few millimetres of deflection is invisible while completely changing where that wheel sits.
The tell is almost always found in the alignment, because a workshop finding one side out of specification and unable to bring it back, with no worn bushes or joints to explain it, is describing a bent arm rather than a wear problem.
Tyre wear follows quickly after that, concentrated on one corner rather than across the front, which is another sign pointing at damage rather than age.
If the vehicle has been through an insurance repair, it is worth confirming the arms were checked rather than assumed. Suspension damage from a low speed impact is easy to miss when the visible panel work has been the focus.
Why a Workshop Often Recommends Both E81, E82, E87, E88 1 Lower Control Arms
Plenty of people arrive expecting to replace one arm and leave having agreed to two, and the reasoning is worth understanding rather than treating as an upsell.
If the fault is wear rather than damage, both arms have covered the same distance on the same roads carrying the same loads. One perished bush almost always means the other is close behind, and the labour to return in six months is the same labour being paid for today.
There is a driving reason on top of the cost one. A new arm with fresh bushes is rigid while an older one still has compliance in it, so under braking and cornering the two sides deflect by different amounts. The vehicle can pull or feel slightly off centre even with a correct alignment.
Where the fault is genuinely impact damage and the other side is sound, replacing one is the correct call and a workshop should tell you so.
The difference between those two situations is what the inspection is for, which is why a good shop looks at both sides before quoting either.
The Check That Tells You One Lower Control Arm or Two
A few minutes with the vehicle supported settles it, and it is worth doing before ordering anything.
Lever each arm against its inboard mounts and watch for movement at the bush rather than flex in the arm. Compare what you see side to side, because the comparison tells you considerably more than either result on its own.
Rock each wheel top to bottom with the suspension unloaded and feel for play at the ball joint. Check both boots while you are there, since a split on one side and an intact boot on the other points firmly at a single failure.
Look closely at the mounting eyes as well, since a bore worn out of round on one arm and round on the other is another single sided indicator.
If both sides show similar wear at similar levels, that is age and you are looking at a pair. If one side is clearly worse than the other with no wear explanation, look for impact damage.
What Comes on an Individual E81, E82, E87, E88 1 Lower Control Arm
Each arm is supplied with the bushes already pressed in, and with the ball joint fitted where the design uses an integral one. The listing states whether a joint is included.
That matters because pressing bushes and ball joints in and out takes a press, correct diameter tooling and time, with a real risk of damaging the arm in the process. A complete arm turns the repair into a remove and replace.
Arms are also side specific on most vehicles. A left and a right can look near identical in a photograph and be entirely different parts, with different mounting spacing or a mirrored shape, so ordering by side rather than by appearance is the safer approach.
Check whether your E81, E82, E87, E88 1 uses different arms front and rear as well, since a rear lower arm on an independent rear end is a separate component doing a related job.
What a Single Arm Replacement Does Not Cover
Worth knowing before booking, because replacing one arm rarely happens in isolation on an older vehicle.
The opposite side is the most obvious omission of all. If the inspection shows wear rather than damage, the other arm is a separate purchase and a separate decision, and leaving it means the vehicle has different amounts of compliance at each front corner.
Sway bar links attach to the lower arm on most vehicles and frequently do not survive being disconnected on anything with age behind it. Having a pair on hand avoids a job stopping halfway.
Tie rod ends sit in the same area and are often inspected at the same time, since the access overlaps and the symptoms can be confused with one another.
And where the arm has been bent by impact, the strut, the wheel and the steering rack are all worth checking, because whatever bent the arm applied that force to everything connected to it.
Asking for the whole corner to be looked at while the arm is off costs nothing and avoids a second visit for something that was visible the first time.
Replacing a Single Lower Control Arm on Your E81, E82, E87, E88 1 and Aligning After
Support the vehicle properly and take the spring load off before separating the ball joint, since a joint under load releases suddenly and without warning.
On designs where the coil spring seats into the lower arm, that spring is compressed while the arm is still attached, and releasing it needs the correct equipment rather than a jack and optimism.
A proper separator is the right tool for the ball joint, since hammering at it damages both the knuckle bore and the threads on the stud.
Leave the inner fasteners loose until the vehicle is back on the ground under its own weight, then torque them. A bush takes a set from the position it is clamped in, and one tightened with the suspension hanging spends its life twisted.
Have the alignment set afterwards in every case. When only one side has been replaced, the alignment is what confirms the two sides now match rather than pulling against each other, which matters more on a single arm replacement than on a pair.
Since 1976 Fulcrum has worked on suspension through 16 Service Centres and 200+ authorised workshops around the country. If you are unsure whether the fault is one side or both, having it inspected before ordering usually costs less than buying the wrong answer.
