Threaded rod sway bar links connect the sway bar to the suspension using a threaded rod, bushes, washers and nuts. Instead of ball joints, each end of the link passes through a mounting hole and is clamped between a pair of bushes, making them a simple, serviceable design used on many vehicles.

This range includes universal threaded rod sway bar links in a choice of lengths, supplied with or without bushings, along with vehicle-specific threaded rod link kits for front and rear sway bars.

What Is a Threaded Rod Sway Bar Link?

A sway bar, also called an anti-roll bar, connects the left and right sides of the suspension to reduce body roll when cornering. Sway bar links, sometimes called end links or drop links, connect each end of the sway bar to the suspension so the bar can do its job.

A threaded rod sway bar link is a bush-type link. It uses a rod or bolt that's threaded at each end. One end passes through a hole in the sway bar, and the other passes through a hole in the suspension mount, such as a control arm or bracket. At each mounting point, the link is clamped between two bushes, held in place with washers and nuts.

The bushes allow the link to move slightly as the suspension travels and the sway bar twists, while the rod transfers load between the suspension and the bar.

How a Threaded Rod Sway Bar Link Is Assembled

A complete threaded rod sway bar link is made up of:

  • The threaded rod, which forms the body of the link
  • Bushes, fitted in pairs on either side of each mounting hole
  • Washers, which sit on the outside of each bush and support it
  • Nuts, which clamp the washers and bushes together at each end

Because each mounting point is clamped between two bushes, one link usually uses four bushes, four washers and four nuts. A pair of links, one for each side of the vehicle, uses eight of each. Complete threaded rod link kits are commonly supplied as two links with eight bushings, eight washers and eight nuts.

Threaded Rod or Ball-Style Sway Bar Links?

Sway bar links are made in different styles, and the right one depends on how your sway bar and suspension mounts are designed.

  • Threaded rod links suit mounts with a plain hole or eye, where the link passes through and is clamped between bushes.
  • Ball-style links suit mounts designed for a ball stud, with a ball joint at each end of the link.

The mounting style is set by the vehicle's design, so check your existing links before choosing a replacement. If your vehicle uses ball-style links, browse the full range of universal sway bar links, including adjustable ball-style and cut-to-length links.

Types of Threaded Rod Sway Bar Link Kits

Universal Threaded Rod Links With Bushings

Universal threaded rod sway bar links with bushings are complete kits, supplied with the rods, bushes, washers and nuts needed for a pair of links. They're listed by overall length, so you can choose the length that suits your vehicle. Lengths in this range include 140 mm, 202 mm and 280 mm.

Universal Threaded Rod Links Without Bushings

Universal threaded rod links are also available without bushings, supplied with the rods, washers and nuts only. These suit jobs where you're choosing the bushes separately, such as matching a particular bush size or using bushes from a bulk pack. Lengths in this range include 140 mm, 202 mm, 240 mm and 280 mm.

If you're buying links without bushings, make sure you have the correct bushes on hand before starting. Browse universal sway bar link bushes and washers, or bulk sway bar link bushes for workshop quantities.

Sway Bar Link and Bush Kits

Sway bar link and bush kits are complete threaded rod link kits listed by total length and thread length at each end. Kits in this range are available in total lengths from 140 mm to 240 mm, with thread lengths of 65 mm or 70 mm at each end. They include two links, eight polyurethane bushings, eight washers and eight nuts.

Vehicle-Specific Threaded Rod Links

Some threaded rod sway bar links are made for particular makes and models, with the length and fittings matched to that vehicle's sway bar and suspension mounts. Use the vehicle search to see the threaded rod links listed for your vehicle.

How to Measure for a Threaded Rod Sway Bar Link

If you're choosing a universal threaded rod link, measure carefully before you buy:

Overall Length

Measure the length of your existing link, or the distance between the sway bar mounting point and the suspension mounting point. Take the measurement with the vehicle at its normal ride height on level ground, with the sway bar sitting in a neutral position. Choose a link length that suits your measurement.

Thread Length

Check the thread length at each end of the link. There needs to be enough thread to fit the bushes, washers and nuts on both sides of each mounting point and tighten them correctly.

Rod and Mounting Hole Size

Check that the rod diameter suits the mounting holes in your sway bar and suspension, and that the bushes you're using suit both the rod and the holes.

Bush and Washer Size

Make sure the bushes suit the rod diameter and mounting holes, and that the washers suit the size of the bushes, so each bush is fully supported.

Signs Your Threaded Rod Sway Bar Links Need Replacing

Threaded rod sway bar links work constantly as the suspension moves. Common signs of wear include:

  • Knocking or clunking from the front or rear suspension, particularly over bumps
  • Worn, cracked or flattened bushes that no longer hold the link firmly
  • A bent link, often after an impact or off-road driving
  • Damaged threads or corroded rods, which can make the nuts difficult to tighten or remove
  • Loose nuts or washers, or bushes that have moved out of position

Knocking noises can also come from sway bar mount bushes, ball joints or other components, so inspect the whole suspension before replacing parts. A free suspension check can help confirm the cause.

Fitting Threaded Rod Sway Bar Links

When fitting threaded rod sway bar links:

  • Fit new bushes and washers with new links, rather than reusing worn parts.
  • Fit a bush on each side of each mounting hole, with a washer on the outside of each bush.
  • Tighten the nuts to the specification for the vehicle or kit. Over-tightening can distort the bushes, while under-tightening can leave the link loose.
  • Replace links in pairs, on both sides of the sway bar.
  • Check clearance between the sway bar, links and other components through the full range of suspension travel.

Replacing sway bar links doesn't normally affect wheel alignment, but other suspension work done at the same time may. Therefore, a wheel alignment is recommended after fitting.
