A universal sway bar link connects your DN, DP TAURUS's sway bar to the suspension when a direct-fit link isn't the right choice. Rather than being made for one vehicle, it's chosen by measurement: ball stud size, length and the mounting style at each end. Universal links can suit aftermarket sway bars, vehicles with a changed ride height and older vehicles where a direct-fit link is hard to find.

What Is a Universal Sway Bar Link?

A sway bar, also called an anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar, ties the left and right sides of the suspension together to help control body roll in corners. Sway bar links, sometimes called end links, connect each end of the bar to a control arm, strut or axle. As the suspension moves, the links let the bar twist and transfer load from one side to the other.

A direct-fit link is made to suit one vehicle's mounting points and length. A universal link is made to a standard set of dimensions instead, such as a 10mm or 12mm ball stud and a fixed or adjustable length. It can be used on more than one application, provided the measurements and mounting style match.

Types of Universal Sway Bar Links

Universal sway bar links come in three main styles. The right one depends on how the bar mounts at each end and whether you need to set the length yourself.

Adjustable Ball-Style Links

Adjustable ball-style links have a ball stud at each end and a threaded body that lets you set the overall length within a range. They're usually listed by ball stud diameter, commonly 10mm or 12mm, and by length range. Being able to fine-tune the length can help where the bar needs to sit at a particular angle, such as after a ride height change or with an aftermarket sway bar.

Cut-to-Length Links

Cut-to-length links are supplied longer than needed so they can be trimmed to suit the installation. They give flexibility for one-off or less common setups. Because the final length is set during fitting, careful measuring matters, and fitting by a qualified technician is recommended if you're unsure.

Threaded Rod and Bushing Links

Threaded rod links use a length of threaded rod with bushes and washers at each end, rather than ball studs. They suit sway bars and mounts designed for a bushing-eye connection. Some are sold with bushings and some without, so check what's included and whether you also need a sway bar link bush or washer kit.

How to Measure a Universal Sway Bar Link for your DN, DP TAURUS

Measuring correctly is the most important step in choosing a universal sway bar link. Before you order, check the following:

  • Mounting style at each end. Note whether each end uses a ball stud, a bushing eye or a threaded rod. The new link needs to match both mounting points.
  • Ball stud diameter. For ball-style links, measure the stud or the hole it passes through. Common sizes are 10mm and 12mm.
  • Centre-to-centre length. Measure from the centre of one mounting point to the centre of the other, with the vehicle at normal ride height. For an adjustable link, make sure this length sits within the adjustment range rather than at either end of it.
  • Clearance through suspension travel. Check that the link won't touch the wheel, tyre, brake lines or body as the suspension compresses, extends and steers.
  • Fitting position. Front and rear links on the same vehicle are often different lengths, so measure each position separately.

If you're unsure of any measurement, a qualified technician can confirm the right size before you buy.

When a Universal Sway Bar Link Makes Sense for Your DN, DP TAURUS

A direct-fit link is usually the simplest choice when one is listed for your DN, DP TAURUS. A universal link can make sense in a few situations:

  • Aftermarket sway bars. A different bar can change where the link mounts or how long it needs to be.
  • Changed ride height. Raising or lowering a vehicle can change the angle of the sway bar. An adjustable link can help set the bar back to a suitable angle.
  • Older or less common vehicles. Where a direct-fit link is hard to find, a universal link chosen by measurement may be an option.
  • Custom builds. Setups with non-standard mounting points often need a link chosen to suit.

A universal link changes how the sway bar is connected, so it's worth having a qualified technician check the setup after fitting, including the bar angle and clearances.

Signs Your DN, DP TAURUS Sway Bar Links May Need Replacing

Worn sway bar links can contribute to several symptoms, including:

  • clunking, knocking or rattling over bumps, especially when one wheel hits a bump on its own
  • more body roll, or a vaguer feel when cornering
  • visible wear, such as a split ball joint boot, a loose ball stud, or cracked or squashed bushes

These symptoms can also come from worn sway bar mount bushes, ball joints, control arm bushes, shock absorbers or other suspension parts. Before replacing a link, have the suspension inspected by a qualified technician to find the actual cause. Fulcrum's Free Suspension Check is one way to start.
