They fix different problems and neither replaces the other. Upper control arms correct steering geometry, mainly caster and camber, so the ute drives and wears tyres properly. A diff drop corrects driveline geometry so the front CVs run at a sensible angle. A 2 inch lift often needs both.
This one comes up because both parts get sold alongside a 2 inch lift and both get described as "correcting geometry", which makes them sound interchangeable. They are not interchangeable. One looks after how the ute steers and how it wears tyres, the other looks after the front driveline. Our diff drop kits sit on the driveline side of that split.
What upper control arms actually correct
Lift an independent front suspension vehicle and the control arms rotate through an arc, which changes the angles the wheel sits at. Two of those angles matter most here.
Caster is the fore and aft tilt of the steering axis. Lifting reduces it, and low caster shows up as vague, wandering steering that does not self centre, worse at highway speed and worse again with a heavy bar on the front. It is the complaint people describe as "the lift ruined the steering".
Camber is the inward or outward lean of the wheel. Lifting typically pulls the top of the wheel out, and if there is not enough adjustment left in the factory arm the alignment cannot be brought back into spec. That eats the outer edge of the tyre.
An aftermarket upper control arm with corrected geometry, or with more adjustment range, puts both back where they belong. It also usually brings a better ball joint and a lot more articulation clearance. What it does not do is touch the front differential or the CV shafts. What a diff drop corrects
A diff drop lowers the front differential and its mounting points as an assembly, which brings the inner CV pivot down toward the height of the outer one and flattens the shaft angle. SuperPro kits in our range drop the diff by approximately 25mm or more.
It has no effect on caster, camber or toe. Your steering will feel identical and your tyres will wear the same way. What changes is how hard the front CV joints are working, which is what decides whether they last.

The row that explains the confusion is the timing one. Skip the arms and you notice on the drive home, so they feel essential. Skip the diff drop and nothing happens for a year, so it feels optional. The consequences are simply on different clocks.
If you can only do one right now
We would rather give you an order than pretend the budget is unlimited.
Do the upper control arms first if the ute is unpleasant to drive after the lift, if the alignment cannot be brought into spec, or if you are already wearing tyre edges. Those are active problems costing you money and safety margin now.
Do the diff drop first if the platform is one where 2 inches puts the CV angle clearly outside range, the N90 Hilux being the obvious case, or if you tow, do high kilometres, or are already seeing grease at the boot clamps. Those are cases where waiting means paying for CVs as well as the kit.
Do both together with the lift if you can, because the labour overlaps heavily. Fitting all three jobs in one visit is meaningfully cheaper than three visits, and you get one alignment at the end rather than two.
