Three generations, three different answers. The N70 tolerated 50mm on long front CV shafts. The N80 narrowed the margin. The N90 reaches its safe operating angle earlier again, so we recommend a diff drop at 2 inches on the new ute where the older ones had more room.

If you have owned Hiluxes across generations, this is the article that explains why the advice you were given last time is not the advice you are getting now. Nothing has changed about how a CV joint works. What changed is the front end it sits in. Our diff drop kits carry a different part for each generation for exactly that reason. 

The two measurements that moved

Every generational difference in this topic comes back to the same pair of numbers.

Front CV shaft length: A longer shaft spreads the same vertical change over a longer horizontal run, so it generates less angle per millimetre of lift. Shorten it and the safe lift height falls with nothing else changing. 

Factory standing operating angle: A platform that already sits steeper at design ride height has less headroom before it runs out. You are adding to a bigger starting number. 

Across N70, N80 and N90 both of these have moved in the direction that reduces tolerance, driven by packaging. Wider tracks, repositioned differentials, larger sumps and crash structures, all of which take space that the CV shaft used to occupy.

N70, where the old advice came from

The N70 is the ute most of the "you don't need one under 3 inches" experience in Australia was built on. It was lifted in enormous numbers, it ran long front shafts, and plenty of 50mm N70s covered high kilometres without a front CV problem. The advice was reasonable on that platform. It is also the reason the belief is so entrenched, because a lot of people have first hand experience backing it up.

N80, where the margin narrowed

Packaging changes tightened things. We still fit plenty of 50mm N80s and we still see N80s at that height running well, but the margin is smaller than it was and the answer moves around more with tyre size, front accessory weight and how the vehicle is used. This is the generation where "it depends" became the honest answer rather than a hedge. 

N90, where the answer changed

On the 2025 on N90 the shafts are shorter and the standing angle steeper again. A 50mm lift takes the front CV angle past where we are willing to sign off a build, at normal ride height rather than only at full droop. That is why we recommend the TRC9023 diff drop on any 2 inch lifted N90, and it is a genuine change in position rather than an upsell that appeared with a new model.

Why we changed our advice, and why that is not a red flag

Being told "we used to say you didn't need this and now we say you do" sounds like a sales tactic. We understand why. So here is the test you should apply to us. 

If the reason we give is generic, be sceptical. If the reason is a specific, checkable change in a specific measurement on a specific platform, then it is engineering. Our reason is that the front CV shafts are shorter and the standing angle is steeper on the N90 than on the utes before it, and that these are measurable figures we will publish. If those numbers do not hold up, the recommendation does not either. 

That is also why our advice is not "all 2 inch lifts need a diff drop". We say the N90 does at that height. On other platforms the answer is different, and we are happy to say no where the measurement says no.

Why does the N90 Hilux need a diff drop at 2 inches when the N70 did not?

Shorter front CV shafts and a steeper factory standing angle. A shorter shaft generates more angle per millimetre of lift, and a steeper starting angle leaves less headroom, so the same 50mm produces a bigger angle on the N90 than on the N70.

Do I need a diff drop for a 2 inch lift on an N80 Hilux?

It depends on the specific build. The N80 has less margin than the N70 and more than the N90, and the answer moves with tyre size, front accessory weight and how you use the ute. Have the front end measured rather than assuming.

Does the same diff drop kit fit an N70 and an N80?

Yes. TRC9007 is listed for the Toyota HiLux N70 and N80 from 2005 to 2025. The N90 takes a different part, TRC9023.

Which diff drop kit fits the N90 Hilux?

Why did Fulcrum's advice change between generations?

Because the platform changed, and specifically because front CV shaft length and factory standing operating angle both moved in the direction that reduces tolerance. The advice is tied to those measurements rather than to a lift height.

Does a bigger tyre change the answer on any of these?

Yes, tyre diameter changes ride height at the hub and therefore the geometry. Include your tyre size when you ask us for the answer for your ute.

Will there be a kit for the new Fortuner on the N90 platform?

We have already released an N90 diff drop kit. Right now, it's unknown if this fits the Fortuner at this time as we engineer all our products
