Lug nuts, also called wheel nuts, hold your wheels securely to your vehicle. They are a small part with an important job, so it's essential to choose lug nuts that match both your vehicle and your wheels. Fulcrum's range of lug nuts suits cars, utes and 4WDs. It includes options for drivers who want to replace their existing lug nuts or give their wheels a fresh look.

What Do Lug Nuts Do?

Your wheels are mounted to the hub on a set of threaded studs. Lug nuts screw onto those studs and clamp the wheel firmly against the hub.

When lug nuts are the right type and tightened correctly, they keep the wheel centred and secure. If the wrong lug nuts are used, or they aren't tightened properly, the wheel may not be held securely. That's why matching your lug nuts to your vehicle and wheels matters.

How to Choose the Right Lug Nuts

Lug nuts aren't one size fits all. Before you buy, check these key details.

Thread Size and Pitch

Lug nuts must match the thread on your vehicle's wheel studs. This includes both the thread diameter and the thread pitch, which is the distance between each thread. A lug nut with the wrong thread won't fit correctly and shouldn't be used. You can usually find your vehicle's thread size in the owner's manual, or a wheel and tyre specialist can confirm it for you.

Seat Type

The seat is the part of the lug nut that makes contact with the wheel. Common seat types include tapered (also called conical), ball (also called radius) and flat. The seat on the lug nut must match the seat on your wheel, so the nut sits correctly and holds the wheel securely.

Factory or Aftermarket Wheels

If you've fitted aftermarket wheels, you may need different lug nuts from the ones supplied with your vehicle. Aftermarket wheels can have a different seat type or require a different lug nut design. Check with your wheel manufacturer to confirm which aftermarket lug nuts suit your wheels.

Quantity

Count the studs on one wheel and multiply by the number of wheels you're fitting to work out how many lug nuts you need. If you also want to fit your spare, include it in your count. Check the product listing to see how many lug nuts come in each set.

Some lug nuts in Fulcrum's range are universal parts that fit by dimension rather than by a specific make and model. For these, check the part dimensions against your vehicle's requirements before ordering. Full specifications are listed on each product page.

Lug Nut Finishes and Styles

Beyond securing your wheels, lug nuts can also change the look of your vehicle. Lug nuts are available in a range of finishes, such as black lug nuts, to complement your wheels and suit your style.

Whatever finish you choose, make sure the thread size, pitch and seat type are correct for your vehicle and wheels. Fit always comes before looks.

Wheel Nut Torque and Fitting

Correct wheel nut torque is essential for keeping your wheels secure. When fitting lug nuts:

  • Check the torque specification in your vehicle's owner's manual or with your wheel manufacturer.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten each lug nut to the specified torque.
  • Tighten in a star or criss-cross pattern rather than working around the wheel in a circle, so the wheel is drawn evenly against the hub.
  • Re-check the torque as recommended by your vehicle or wheel manufacturer.

If you're not confident fitting lug nuts, have them fitted by a qualified technician. With Fulcrum's Click & Fit service, you can buy your lug nuts online and have them delivered to your nearest Fulcrum workshop for installation.

When to Replace Lug Nuts

You may need new lug nuts when:

  • Your existing lug nuts are damaged or have worn or damaged threads
  • You've fitted new wheels that require a different seat type or lug nut design
  • Some of your lug nuts are missing and you need a matching set
  • You want to change the look of your wheels with a new finish

If you notice any damage to your lug nuts or wheel studs, have them checked before driving.
