Read moreTow bar wiring provides the electrical connection needed for a vehicle to communicate with a connected trailer. A tow bar wiring harness can carry signals for functions such as trailer tail lights, brake lights and indicators, helping the trailer respond correctly to the vehicle's lighting controls.
Universal towbar wiring provides an alternative to a vehicle-specific harness for suitable applications. However, "universal" does not mean that every wiring kit is compatible with every vehicle. Electrical systems vary, and some vehicles require a dedicated harness, trailer module or other components to integrate correctly with their electronics.
What Does Tow Bar Wiring Do?
A trailer needs more than a physical connection to the towbar. It also requires an electrical connection so essential lighting functions can operate when the vehicle's lights, brakes and indicators are used.
A trailer wiring harness connects the relevant vehicle electrical circuits to a trailer plug or socket. Depending on the setup, this can provide connections for functions including:
- Tail and clearance lights
- Brake lights
- Left and right indicators
- Earth connection
- Other supported trailer electrical functions
The exact functions available depend on the wiring kit, plug configuration and towing setup.
Some installations can use a relatively straightforward wiring harness, while others require additional electronics to interface safely with the vehicle's electrical system. This is why the wiring requirements should be identified before choosing a towbar wiring kit.
Universal vs Vehicle-Specific Towbar Wiring
Universal and vehicle-specific towbar wiring can perform similar basic functions, but they differ in how they connect to the vehicle.
A universal wiring harness is designed to be adapted during installation rather than being produced for one particular vehicle application. This can make universal wiring useful where the vehicle's electrical system and installation requirements are suitable.
Vehicle-specific wiring is designed around a particular vehicle electrical configuration. Depending on the system, this can include dedicated connectors, modules or other components intended to integrate with the existing electronics.
Genuine or OEM wiring harnesses are another vehicle-specific option where available. These are produced for particular vehicle applications and may integrate with functions or electrical systems specific to that vehicle.
Modern vehicle electronics can make this distinction particularly important. Some electrical systems monitor lighting circuits or communicate through electronic control systems, and connecting an unsuitable universal harness directly to those circuits can cause incorrect operation or electrical problems.
A universal harness should therefore only be used where it is suitable for the vehicle and installed according to the requirements of the wiring system. If compatibility is uncertain, check before installation rather than assuming a universal kit will work.
Types of Universal Towbar Wiring Kits
Universal towbar wiring kits can use different approaches depending on the vehicle electrical system and the functions required.
Understanding the type of harness or module included can help determine whether the kit is appropriate for the intended installation.
Universal Wiring Harnesses
A universal wiring harness provides the wiring needed to connect compatible vehicle lighting circuits to the trailer connection. Unlike a vehicle-specific harness, a universal wiring kit generally requires the installer to identify and connect the appropriate circuits during fitting. The installation method therefore depends on both the harness design and the vehicle's electrical system.
The required number of circuits and connections can also vary according to the trailer plug and functions being supported.
Before selecting a universal wiring harness for a towbar, confirm that the vehicle's electrical system is suitable for that type of connection and that the harness supports the required trailer functions.
Smart Relay and Control Module Kits
Some tow bar wiring installations use a smart relay, trailer module or control module between the vehicle's electrical circuits and the trailer wiring.
Rather than placing the trailer electrical load directly onto a vehicle lighting circuit, a suitable module can use the vehicle's lighting signals to control the corresponding trailer circuits through the wiring system.
The exact operation and compatibility depend on the individual module and vehicle electrical design. A trailer module should therefore be selected according to its specified application and installation requirements.
The presence of a control module does not automatically make a universal kit suitable for every modern vehicle. Some applications can still require vehicle-specific wiring or additional integration.
Trailer Plugs, Sockets and Adapters
The towbar wiring harness ultimately needs to connect to the trailer through a compatible plug and socket arrangement.
Common configurations include 7 pin trailer wiring and 12 pin trailer wiring, but the appropriate connection depends on the functions required by the trailer and the electrical setup already fitted.
The vehicle socket and trailer plug need to use compatible configurations. Where different plug types need to be connected, a suitable adapter may provide a practical solution without replacing the complete plug or socket.
Adapter and extension leads should still be appropriate for the required electrical functions. Excess cable should also be routed and secured appropriately so it is not left vulnerable to dragging, snagging or damage.
Trailer plugs, sockets, adapters and related connection hardware can be found in Fulcrum's Tow Bar Accessories range.
What to Check Before Buying a Towbar Wiring Kit
Choosing tow bar wiring starts with the vehicle's electrical requirements rather than simply choosing between a 7 pin or 12 pin connection.
Before purchasing a towbar wiring kit, check:
- Whether universal wiring is suitable for the vehicle
- Whether a vehicle-specific harness is required or recommended
- The trailer lighting and electrical functions that need to be supported
- Whether a smart relay or trailer module is required
- The trailer plug and socket configuration
- Compatibility between the wiring kit and existing towing equipment
- Whether adapters or additional electrical components are required
- The installation requirements of the individual wiring kit
If the vehicle uses a more complex electrical system, professional advice can help determine whether a universal wiring harness is appropriate or whether a vehicle-specific solution is required.
Correct installation is equally important. Wiring needs to be connected to the appropriate circuits and routed and protected so it is not unnecessarily exposed to heat, movement, abrasion or other potential sources of damage.
