Read moreUniversal pivot bushes are replacement bushes chosen by size rather than by vehicle. They're used to replace worn bushes at suspension pivot points, where a component rotates on a bolt, pin or sleeve. If you know the dimensions of the bush you need, a universal pivot bush can be a practical way to restore a worn mounting point.
What Is a Universal Pivot Bush?
A pivot bush sits between a moving suspension component and its mounting bolt or pin. It has three main jobs:
- Allowing movement. The bush lets the component rotate as the suspension moves up and down.
- Holding position. The bush locates the component in its mount so it doesn't shift under load.
- Cushioning the joint. The bush separates metal parts, reducing noise, vibration and metal-to-metal wear.
A vehicle-specific bush is made to suit a particular make and model. A universal pivot bush is instead defined by its dimensions, so it can be used wherever those dimensions match the mounting point.
Where Pivot Bushes Are Used
Pivot bushes are found throughout a vehicle's suspension wherever a component pivots on a bolt or pin. Common locations include:
- Leaf spring eyes, where the ends of a leaf spring mount to the chassis hanger or shackle
- Spring shackles, which allow a leaf spring to change length as it flexes
- Suspension arm mounts, where arms pivot at the chassis or axle
Pivot bushes in leaf-sprung 4WDs and utes are a common replacement item, particularly in vehicles that have covered high kilometres or regularly carry heavy loads.
Why Pivot Bushes Wear
Every time the suspension moves, pivot bushes are twisted, compressed and loaded. Over time, several factors wear them out:
- High kilometres. Constant suspension movement gradually wears the bush.
- Heavy loads and towing. Extra weight increases the force on every pivot point.
- Rough roads and off-road driving. Corrugations and uneven terrain increase suspension movement and impact loads.
- Exposure to the elements. Water, dirt, road grime and heat all contribute to wear over time.
As a bush wears, it allows more movement than the suspension was designed for. This can affect how the vehicle handles and can increase wear on surrounding components.
Signs Your Pivot Bushes May Be Worn
Look out for these common signs:
- Clunking or knocking from the suspension over bumps
- Squeaking or creaking as the suspension moves
- Visible movement at the pivot point when the suspension is loaded and unloaded
- Cracked, split or deformed bushes, or bushes that have moved out of their housing
- A vague or less settled feel when driving, particularly with a load
If you notice any of these, have the suspension inspected. A free suspension check can help confirm which bushes, or other components, need attention.
What to Check Before Buying
Because universal pivot bushes are fitted by dimension, correct measurements are essential. Check these details against the mounting point you're working on:
- Outside diameter. The bush must fit firmly in its housing, such as the spring eye or mount.
- Inside diameter. The bore must suit the bolt, pin or sleeve that runs through it.
- Length. The bush must suit the width of the mount, so it locates correctly between the hanger, shackle or bracket.
- Sleeve or tube. Check whether the bush is supplied with an inner sleeve, and whether your existing sleeve is reusable.
- Hardness (durometer), where listed. Harder bushes allow less movement, while softer bushes provide more cushioning.
- Quantity. Check how many bushes are included and how many you need to complete the job.
Measuring Tips
- Measure the housing, not just the old bush. A worn bush may be compressed or deformed, so its measurements may not match the original size. Measuring the housing and the bolt or sleeve gives a more reliable result.
- Use accurate tools. Vernier callipers give more precise measurements than a tape measure.
- Compare with the listed dimensions. Each product page lists the information available for that bush. If the measurements aren't shown, contact us before ordering to confirm fitment.
Universal or Vehicle-Specific Bushes?
Universal pivot bushes are useful when you know the exact dimensions you need, when a vehicle-specific bush isn't listed for your vehicle, or when you're working on a modified or custom setup.
If a bush kit is available for your make and model, it's often the simplest option, because fitment has already been confirmed for your vehicle. Use the vehicle search to check the full range of suspension bushes before choosing a universal option.
Fitting Universal Pivot Bushes
Replacing a pivot bush usually involves removing the component, pressing out the old bush and pressing in the new one. Depending on the location, this can require a press and other specialist tools.
When fitting:
- Follow any instructions supplied with the bush, including lubrication requirements.
- Tighten fasteners to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque.
- Check the vehicle afterwards. Replacing suspension bushes can affect suspension geometry, so a wheel alignment may be needed.
