Read moreTorsion bars are springing components used in some suspension systems, particularly in 4WD applications. Rather than compressing like a coil spring, a torsion bar twists along its length as the suspension moves, providing the spring force needed to support the vehicle and allow controlled suspension travel.
Replacement and upgraded 4WD torsion bars can be used where the existing bars are worn or where a suspension setup requires a different torsion bar specification. Choosing the right bars depends on the suspension design, vehicle setup and intended application, rather than simply selecting the stiffest option available.
What Is Torsion Bar Suspension?
A torsion bar is a straight spring-steel bar that works by twisting. In a torsion bar suspension system, one end of the bar is connected to a suspension component while the other is anchored to the vehicle structure. As the suspension moves, the bar twists and resists that movement, creating spring force.
In applications where torsion bars are used at the front, the torsion bar effectively performs the springing function that a coil spring would perform in another suspension design.
This arrangement can provide a compact way of packaging the suspension spring. However, the torsion bar still works as part of a complete suspension system alongside components such as control arms, shock absorbers, bushes and other locating components.
The specification of the torsion bar matters because its dimensions, material properties and design influence its spring characteristics. A replacement torsion bar therefore needs to be suitable for the suspension system and intended application.
Why Torsion Bars Are Replaced or Upgraded
Torsion bars can be replaced for several reasons. Existing bars may require attention because of age, damage or changes in suspension behaviour, while other vehicles may require a different torsion bar specification as part of a broader suspension upgrade.
Changes to vehicle setup can also affect what is required from the front suspension. Additional constant load, suspension modifications or a change in intended use may alter the spring requirements of the vehicle.
An upgraded torsion bar may be appropriate where its specifications are designed for those requirements. However, "upgrade" does not automatically mean that a stiffer torsion bar is the correct choice. Spring rate needs to suit the vehicle setup and work with the rest of the suspension.
Torsion bars should therefore be considered as part of the complete suspension system rather than an isolated component.
Types of Torsion Bar Kits
Torsion bar kits can vary according to the suspension design and intended application. Some provide replacement or upgraded torsion bars, while associated fitting components may also be available where required for installation.
Upgraded Torsion Bars
Upgraded torsion bars are designed as alternatives to the original bars for particular suspension requirements. Depending on the specific product, an upgraded bar may use a different spring rate or other design characteristics to suit its intended application. Where a torsion bar is specifically described as heavy duty or as having an increased rate, these characteristics should be assessed against the vehicle's actual suspension requirements.
The aim is not simply to make the front suspension as firm as possible. The torsion bars need to work appropriately with vehicle load, shock absorbers and the rest of the suspension system.
For this reason, the individual product specifications should be checked rather than assuming all aftermarket torsion bars provide the same type or degree of change.
Torsion Bar Fitting Kits
A torsion bar fitting kit can contain components required to install or support the relevant torsion bar arrangement.
The contents can differ between applications, so the term should not be interpreted as a standard package containing the same components for every suspension system.
When replacing torsion bars, inspect the associated mounting and suspension components as well. Worn bushes, damaged mounting hardware or problems elsewhere in the suspension may need separate attention rather than being addressed by the torsion bars themselves.
Signs Your Torsion Bars May Need Inspection
Torsion bars operate under repeated twisting loads as the suspension moves. If there is a concern with the front suspension, the bars and their associated mounting points can be inspected as part of a broader suspension assessment.
Reasons for inspection can include:
- A visible difference in ride height that cannot be explained by load
- Changes in front suspension behaviour
- Visible damage or corrosion requiring further assessment
- Concerns about the condition of torsion bar mounting points
- Suspension movement or noises requiring diagnosis
- Changes noticed after suspension or load modifications
These symptoms do not prove that a torsion bar is faulty. Ride-height changes, noises and altered suspension behaviour can have several causes, including bushes, shock absorbers, mounting components or other suspension parts. A suspension inspection can help identify the source before replacement parts are selected.
Torsion Bars and Ride Height
Torsion bar suspension systems commonly provide a means of adjusting torsion bar preload, which can alter the vehicle's static ride height within the adjustment range of the particular suspension design.
However, torsion bar adjustment should not be confused with changing the spring rate of the bar. Increasing preload or changing the adjustment does not turn the existing bar into a higher-rate spring.
Ride-height changes can also affect other aspects of the suspension. Control-arm position, wheel alignment, available suspension travel and the operating position of related components may change as ride height is altered.
For this reason, a torsion bar lift should not be approached simply as a matter of turning an adjuster until the desired height is reached. The complete suspension geometry and available travel need to remain suitable for the vehicle.
If torsion bar adjustment is required, having the suspension set up by a qualified technician allows ride height and related suspension settings to be checked together.
What to Check Before Buying Torsion Bars
Start by confirming that the vehicle uses the relevant torsion bar suspension design and identifying the correct replacement specification.
Consider the current suspension setup, vehicle load and whether the aim is to replace existing bars or change the spring characteristics as part of a broader suspension upgrade.
Before choosing a torsion bar or torsion bar kit, check:
- Correct fitment for the suspension application
- Whether the bars are intended as replacement or upgraded components
- The specified spring characteristics where provided
- Existing and expected vehicle load
- Compatibility with the rest of the suspension setup
- The condition of associated mounts, bushes and fitting components
- Whether ride height or wheel alignment will need to be checked after installation
If you're unsure whether the torsion bars themselves are responsible for a suspension concern, diagnosis before ordering can help avoid replacing components unnecessarily.
Find Torsion Bars for Your Vehicle
The right torsion bars need to match both the suspension application and what you need the suspension to do. Fulcrum Suspensions can help with product identification as well as suspension inspection, fitting and setup, giving you the option of purchasing the parts directly or arranging professional installation.
Search by Vehicle, Rego or Part Number
Fulcrum's online vehicle search makes it easier to narrow suspension components to the relevant application. You can search using vehicle details, registration information where supported, or a known part number to help identify suitable torsion bars and related components.
Fitment should still be checked against the individual product information, particularly where the vehicle has already been modified or its suspension configuration differs from standard.
If you're uncertain which torsion bar specification suits the current setup, Fulcrum's suspension specialists can also provide fitment assistance and advice before purchase.
Click and Fit Installation
Fulcrum's Click & Fit service combines purchasing suspension components online with professional installation through a participating workshop.
This is particularly useful for torsion bars because installation can involve more than physically replacing the bars. Ride height, torsion bar adjustment and the condition of related suspension components may also need to be checked as part of the job.
Delivery to Your Door
If you're arranging installation yourself, shop online and get your suspension parts without booking a workshop installation. Whether you're replacing existing torsion bars or changing the suspension specification to suit a different setup, start with correct fitment and the requirements of the complete suspension system.
